Knife attack at welfare facility in Sagamihara leave 19 in state of cardiopulmonary arrest

A total of 19 people were in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest and dozen others injured in a knife attack Tuesday morning at a facility for mentally handicapped people in Sagamihara.
Police arrested a 26-year old man who turned himself in at the Tsukui Police Station on suspicion of attempted murder and intrusion.
According to police, there was an emergency called from the Tsukui Yamayuri-en at about 2:40 a.m. Tuesday, saying a knife-wielding man broke in the facility. Officers from the police station rushed to the scene and found many people were stabbed.
At about 3 a.m., Satoshi Uematsu turned himself in the police station and police arrested the man. Police said Uematsu described himself as a former staffer of the facility.
According to the Kanagawa prefectural government, the facility was opened by the prefectural government in 1964. Since April 2005, it has been run by social welfare association Kanagawa Kyodo-kai. As of April, 149 mentally handicapped people aged 19 to 75 were staying at the facility.
