ABOUT THE LNOB

https://www.opera.lv/en/about/about-the-lno/

In the course of a season that runs from September to June the LNOB performs more than 200 performances, staging on average six new productions every season of both opera and ballet. The LNOB today is a repertoire theatre.

While paying tribute to the traditional values of the classical and Romantic operas and ballets that are the cornerstones of its repertoire, the LNOB continually strives to seek contemporary forms of expression. The LNO stage regularly resounds with successful productions of modern operatic and ballet masterpieces, children's performances, and original Latvian works. The LNOB is open to the world: the company has an active touring schedule with many superb guest singers, conductors, choreographers and directors frequently gracing the LNO stage. In recent seasons, the LNOB has been touring to the Hong Kong Festival, the Bordeaux Opera, the Catania Opera, the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, the Luxembourg Opera, the Dalhalla Festival in Sweden, to Mexico. The LNO is a place where talent is born – popular soloists like Elīna Garanča, Kristine Opolais, Marina Rebeka, Maija Kovaļevska, Inese Galante, Aleksandrs Antoņenko and Egils Silins started their careers at the LNO.

The LNO Company was founded soon after independence was declared on the 18th of November, 1918, and in the 1920s the opera company was joined by the first professional Latvian ballet ensemble. The LNOB occupies a stately neo-classical style building in Riga, originally constructed as the Riga German Theatre in 1863.

Choreography of Edward Clug in the ballet “Peer Gynt”

https://www.opera.lv/en/article/choreography-of-edward-clug-in-the-ballet-peer-gynt-1706/

Latvian National Opera announces the premiere of of the ballet “Peer Gynt” on October 28th, 2016. Choreography of the ballet is made by Edward Clug, Music Director and Conductor of the performance – Mārtiņš Ozoliņš, Conductor is Farhads Stade and Costume Designer – Leo Kulaš. Set designer of the production is Marko Japelj.

Cast of the new production includes Arturs Sokolovs, Antons Freimans or Kristaps Jaunžeikars as Peer Gynt, Solveig is portrayed by Alise Prudāne, Annija Kopštāle or Julija Brauere. In the new production will also participate such artists as Andris Pudāns, Baiba Kokina, Viktors Seiko, Raimonds Martinovs and others.

The story of Ibsen’s five-act verse drama Peer Gynt (1867) takes place in various very distant places (including Egypt) and depicts the fate of the opportunistic globetrotter Peer Gynt who returns home Norway as an old man after many adventures in order finally to meet with Solveig, who waited faithfully for him her whole life and represents his last chance for redemption.

Following the tradition of the contemporary ballet story-telling, a new ballet creation by an internationally acclaimed Slovenian choreographer Edward Clug will take us to realms of intoxicating self-irony, absurd and surrealism, which are reflected also in enchanting melodies and poetic dreams of Grieg’s incidental and concert music.
