Andrzej Duda, a conservative backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, won 51.55% of the vote to secure victory in Poland's presidential elections, with incumbent Bronislaw Komorowski trailing on 48.45%, according to official results announced by the National Electoral Commission.

Turnout for the second-round runoff between Duda and Komorowski on Sunday was 55.34%.

The vote, which appeared to show Duda capturing young voters, who had largely supported anti-establishment candidate and former rock star Pawel Kukiz in the first round of voting, puts the wind in the sails of PiS ahead of autumn parliamentary elections.

Duda had been largely unknown ahead of the campaign. He was not present on the monthly CBOS survey of trust and name recognition prior to his December 2014 nomination to the candidacy. At debut, 43% of Poles claimed to have never heard of him. More people claimed indifference than either trusted or distrusted him.

Duda proved a very energetic campaigner, hitting the road on the "DudaBus" into 240 county seats nationwide to meet with a broad swathe of electorates. Duda turned vocal on current affairs and policy to give his candidacy a broader "candidate of change" feel and make the election something of a referendum on the ruling Civic Platform (PO) government.

The PO, stunned by the weak performance of Komorowski in the first round of voting, will now scramble to regain lost or disillusioned electorates in time for an autumn general election. PO has led a coalition government since 2007.

"It's a serious warning to PO," Foreign Minister and party notable Grzegorz Schetyna said in comments to the vote results. "Five months before the parliamentary election we need to ask ourselves some tough questions and look for tough answers."

Duda comes to office having issued a long list of spending promises to a variety of electorates. Duda has vowed to work for a hefty increase in the standardized tax deduction, a per-child subsidy, a roll back of the prior retirement age hike and conversion of FX-denominated mortgages at the FX rate from their issuance.

Polish government is ready for "best possible" cooperation with the newly elected president Andrzej Duda, candidate of conservative opposition party Law and Justice (PiS), PM Ewa Kopacz said.

"The government and the president serve the same employer - the nation," she added.

The election result is a signal that "you can't do politics if you're not out there every minute of every day together with Poles," Kopacz said.

Her government will spend the five months to autumn elections back in contact with voters, she also said.
