Geoff Lajbrok's poem 'Goose in the Suitcase' scoops £5,000
first prize at city centre ceremony
The winner of this year’s Cardiff International Poetry
Competition was announced at a ceremony in the city tonight.
The first prize of £5,000 was awarded to Geoff Lajbrok, from
Cambridge, for
his poem the 'Goose in the Suitcase'.
Second prize of £500 went to Rosie Shepperd, from London, for her poem 'My milkman comes from Sarajevo and has
beautiful hands'.
She is currently studying for a PhD at the University of South Wales.
Third prize went to Valerie Laws from Northumbria and £50 prizes went to five runners-up
including Anna Wigley from Cardiff
for her poem 'Collecting the Casket'.
The judging panel included Gillian Clarke, National Poet of
Wales, and former Poet Laureate Andrew Motion.
Motion said he hoped the winning poems would now give the
readers as much pleasure as they gave him and the other judges.
Tonight's ceremony,
organised by Literature Wales , was held at Porters where guests were treated
to readings from the shortlisted authors of the Wales Book of the Year and
music from jazz pianist and composer Paul Jones.
The top three winning poems will appear in the New Welsh
Review 101 from September 1.
