Canberra's
centenary celebrations have provided a big boost for the ACT's tourism
industry.
A Tourism Research Australia
survey found the number of people visiting Canberra for a holiday increased by more than
50 per cent in the March quarter.
There were 526,000 domestic overnight visitors and 537,000
day trip visitors.
The increase coincides with a big program of events for the
capital's centenary.
It is estimated more than 2 million visitors contributed
$1.18 billion to the local economy in the year to March.
Australian Capital Tourism CEO Ian Hill says holidaymakers
are driving the increase.
"These figures are really strong in a sense of the
domestic market is growing at 1.8 per cent and we've grown at 8.8 per cent
across the three purposes of visit, which is leisure, visiting friends and
relatives (VFR), and business travel," he said.
"I think the really pleasing thing from our end is it's
53 per cent rise in VFR and leisure, which shows that the holiday segment is
the one that's probably really driven these first quarterly results."
