Debbie Reynolds has died a day after her daughter Carrie Fisher.
The 84-year-old was taken to hospital in Los Angeles on Wednesday from her son Todd Fisher's Beverly Hills house after an apparent stroke.
The pair are said to have been planning Fisher's funeral when Reynolds took ill. An ambulance was leaving the property shortly after 1pm.
Hours later, Todd confirmed his mother had died, telling TMZ: 'She's with Carrie'.
The 60-year-old Star Wars actress in a Los Angeles hospital on Tuesday four days after suffering a heart attack on board a transatlantic flight.
A family spokesman was not available for comment on Wednesday evening.
Reynolds is understood to have been in a 'fair to serious' condition when she was hospitalized at around 1pm.
Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd emerged for the first time on Wednesday minutes before her grandmother's apparent stroke.
The 24-year-old, who is also an actress, was seen leaving her Santa Monica home with rumored boyfriend Taylor Lautner.
Hours after her daughter's death on Tuesday, Reynolds thanked fans for their support and condolence
'Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and amazing daughter.
'I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop. Love Carries Mother,' she said on Facebook.
Reynolds, who inducted her daughter into Hollywood royalty after a dazzling film career of her own, was married to Fisher's father Eddie for four years between 1955 and 1959.
Todd, who is also an actor, and Carrie were their only children together. Before his mother's death on Wednesday, Todd tweeted: 'My sister has graduated to heaven, but she has left us all with so much of her.
'It is a very sad time for my family and all her friends.'
He earlier shared a photograph of the pair as young children, writing alongside it: 'We have always been close, that's why my mother had me, so Carrie would have someone to look after her.'
Their father left Reynolds for Elizabeth Taylor in 1958, a year after Todd was born and within weeks of the death of Taylor's third husband Mike Todd.
Todd and Fisher had been best friends as were their wives and the pair often holidayed together.
When Todd was suddenly killed in a plane crash, Fisher was sent by his wife to look after Taylor in her home.
The pair quickly embarked on an affair, however, sparking one of Hollywood's most salacious scandals. They were married for five years before Taylor moved on to Richard Burton.
Despite the remarkable betrayal, Reynolds forgave Taylor and remained her friend until her 2011 death.
Fisher, who later married actress Connie Stevens, died in 2010.
During their early childhood, Reynolds often brought Todd and Carrie with her to film sets.
She is best known for her role in Singin' In The Rain which she appeared in alongside Gene Kelly at the age of 19.
Reynolds' career was catapulted by her winning a beauty contest when she was 16 and she encouraged both her children to pursue acting.
Despite a complicated relationship when Fisher was younger, the pair grew close again in recent years.
They did not speak for 10 years, with Reynolds once describing the rift as 'total estrangement'.
Fisher, who battled drug abuse during her twenties, 'did not want to be Debbie Reynold's daughter', she once admitted.
'We had a fairly volatile relationship earlier on in my 20s.
'I didn’t want to be around her. I did not want to be Debbie Reynolds’ daughter,' she told People.
