In an intensely personal interview, Vice President Biden told Stephen Colbert Thursday he'd "be lying if I said that I knew I was there" emotionally for another run for President.

"I don't think any man or woman should run for President unless, number one, they know exactly why they would want to be President and two, they can look at folks out there and say 'I promise you have my whole heart, my whole soul, my energy, and my passion,'" Biden told Colbert, according to a pool report from the taping of “Late Show.”

"And, I'd be lying if I said that I knew I was there. I'm being completely honest. Nobody has a right in my view to seek that office unless they are willing to give it 110% of who they are."

Biden, still grieving the death this past spring of his son Beau, choked up several times during the interview and said that his eldest "was better than me in every way."

He also recounted his son, a few months before he died, told him "Dad, I know how much you love me. Promise me you're going to be all right."

Biden is getting strong encouragement from some corners of the Democratic Party to run as front-runner Hillary Clinton's ongoing struggles have alarmed some party observers.

Biden has had a much busier public schedule as of late, and has been publicly mulling a bid.

But he made it clear Thursday night that Beau's death was a big factor in his decision — both as a deterrent for his grieving family and as a reason to consider a run.

"As long as you are alive you have an obligation to strive and you're not dead until you see the face of God," he said, quoting an expression his mother used to use. "No one owes you anything. You gotta get up. And I feel like I was letting down Beau, letting down my parents, letting down my family if I didn't just get up."

Biden also brought up Colbert’s own tragedy — the death of the TV star’s father and brothers in a plane crash when he was a kid.

Colbert wrapped up the interview by practically begging Biden to jump in.

"It's going to be emotional for a lot of people if you don't run. Your example of suffering and service is something that would be sorely missed in the race," he said.

The Late Show with Stephen Colbert

“I think you should run for President and I’ll be your Vice President,” Joe Biden said to Stephen Colbert today. The remarks came in what was an emotional interview at the Ed Sullivan Theater for the VP; it was the first TV interview Biden has given since his eldest son Beau died in late May. “I was a hell of a success,’ Biden told Colbert. “My son was better than me. He was better than me in every way.”
