G20 SUMMIT IN HAMBURG
https://www.elbphilharmonie.de/en/g20
On 7 and 8 July 2017, the member heads of state and government of the »Group of 20« (G20), which consists of 20 of the major industrialised and emerging economies, meet against the backdrop of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg.
Federal Chancellor Angela Merkel is G20’s chairperson and host this year. Current global topics such as world economy, migration, climate change and energy, digitalisation and counterterrorism will be discussed at the summit.
The greater part of the summit takes place on the grounds of the Hamburg Messe and Congress, however an event at the Elbphilharmonie is planned for the evening of 7 July: the Hamburg Philharmonic State Orchestra under the baton of Kent Nagano perform Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony in the Grand Hall for guests of the summit – the soloists are Christiane Karg (soprano), Okka von der Damerau (mezzosoprano), Klaus Florian Vogt (tenor) and Franz-Josef Selig (bass).
»The Elbphilharmonie welcomes the participants of the G20 Summit and we look forward to an exchange of cultures. It is a powerful statement that the Federal Government has invited guests from all around the world to the Elbphilharmonie. It is not simply an exceptional concert hall; as a »concert hall for everyone« it embodies modern society’s fundamental values of a free, open and democratic culture.«
(Olaf Scholz, Mayor of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg)
