RASPRAVA / DISCUSSION

ENRICO MIHICH

Enrico Mihich was born in Fiume (Rijeka), in 1928, to otorhinolaryngologist Milan Mihich (1892-1948) and Rosina Lenaz (1908-1955), the daughter of the famous inovator of hematology and neurology and politician Lionello Lenaz (1872-1939). Enrico Mihich graduated from the Faculty of Medicine in Milan (1951) and worked there until 1969, when he left for Buffalo.

Dr. Mihich was the first to demonstrate that the therapeutic effects of certain anticancer drugs and cytokines are dependent upon the drug-induced modulation of the immune responses against the tumor. He was also the first to show that leukemic cells resistant to certain drugs are more immunogenic than the sensitive cells. Later dr. Mihich’s team discovered TIP-B1, a protein which is induced by TNF and inhibits the

cytotoxic effects of TNF.

He also showed that inhibitors of polyamines have antitumor effects thus opening this field of therapeutic research.

In Buffalo N.Y. he was for more than 30 years the director of the Grace Cancer Drug Center which developed international reputation for biochemical

pharmacological studies of anti cancer drugs and for the development of new anticancer therapies. He had also considerable influence on oncological research in the USA and elsewhere through his activities as a leader and a member in various important committees. So he was elected President of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) and was appointed member of the National Cancer Advisory Board. While he was a member of the Board of Scientific Advisors of the Division of Cancer Treatment of the

National Cancer Institute he chaired a subcommittee which developed the

Biological Response Modifiers Program of the NCI. He was a member of

the Board of the UICC and chaired the program committee for the XIII international Cancer Congress; he co-chaired the first AACR/JCA (Japan Cancer Association) joint meeting in Hawai, and developed the annual symposia

of the Pezcoller Foundation which he organized for 20 years. He was made Honorary member of the JCA, was recognized with the Lifetime Science

Award of the Institute of Advanced Studies in Immunology and Aging and recently was made a member of the Academy of the AACR.

In addition to his scientific activities, Dr Mihich was able to develop the renaissance of the music of Marcel Tyberg, which had been saved by his father when Tyberg was taken by the Nazi in 1944 and died in Auschwitz at the end of that year. Tyberg composed most of his music in Abbazia, in the thirties and early forties.

GIORGIO LENAZ

Born in Padua (Italy) on November 3, 1938.

1962 – 1969 Research associate, Institute of Biochemistry, University of

Bologna, Italy

1964 – 1967 On leave for the Institute of Enzyme Research , Univ of Wisconsin, Madison WI, USA

1966 – 1967 Assistant  Professor,  Institute  for  Enzyme  Research,

U.Wisconsin, Madison WI, USA

1969 – 1975 Assistant Professor, Institute of Biochemistry, University of

Bologna, Italy

1975 – 1979 Full Professor of Biochemistry, Medical School, University

of Ancona, Italy

1989 – 2011 Full Professor of Biochemistry, Medical School, University

of Bologna, Italy

2012 –  Professor Emeritus, University of Bologna

He is author of over 400 publications (>340 of which quoted on Medline since 1963) has been invited as a speaker at over 70 international meetings and is invited author of 25 reviews and 73 chapters of books in the field of Bioenergetics. He has organized some national and international Meetings and has been a member of the executive committee of national and international scientific societies (Italian Biochemical Society, International Coenzyme Q10 Association, President of the Italian Group of Bioenergetics).

His research mainly concerns the structural and functional organization of the respiratory chain in mitochondria, in particular:

– The role of Coenzyme Q in electron transfer

– The presence and function of super-complexes of the respiratory chain, in particular concerning the mechanism of substrate channelling

– Mechanism of electron transfer and production of oxygen radicals by the respiratory chain, in particular by Complex I

– Role of mitochondria in pathological alterations, including cancer and in aging.
