SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Torrential rain pounded most of South Korea on Sunday, leaving six people dead and seven others missing, officials said.

The Ministry of the Interior and Safety said the heavy rainfall triggered landslides in dozens of places, flooded residential areas and roads, and damaged some riverside structures.
Much of the damage occurred in the Seoul metropolitan area and the central region.

The ministry didn’t say how the six people died. South Korean media reported they were either buried by mud caused by landslides or drowned after being swept away by swollen waters.
The torrential rain also left six people injured and 360 others homeless, the ministry said.

The Seoul area and the central region are expected to continue to receive heavy rain until Monday morning.

Political analyst Joe Siracusa says North Korean leader Kim Jong Un "doesn't look well in the pictures that we see".

The North Korean leader recently convened an emergency meeting after the country reported its first possible case of COVID-19 – prompting the lockdown of one of the hermit kingdom’s cities.

The Korean Central News Agency said a “runaway” who left the country three years ago returned illegally on July 19 and displayed symptoms of COVID-19.

After several medical tests provided uncertain results, the individual was quarantined, and everyone in Kaesong city who came into close contact with the person or who had been in the city in the last five days is under investigation, examination and quarantine.

Until now, North Korea had claimed it had no cases.

"I think the COVID thing is far more serious in North Korea than we know of," Mr Siracusa told Sky News.
