Ilya Demutsky (b. 1983) is a Russian multi-award winning composer, performer, and conductor. His works include compositions for orchestra, chorus, chamber ensemble, piano, voice, as well as electronic and film music.
The legendary Bolshoi Theatre of Moscow commissioned Demutsky to compose a new full-length ballet, A Hero of Our Time, which won the Golden Mask Russian National Theatre Award for Best Ballet Production for 2015/2016, as well as the award for Best Composer in Musical Theatre for Demutsky. Two new ballets composed by Demutsky will be premiered in 2017: a new work commissioned by the San Francisco Ballet, and the full-length ballet Nureyev commissioned by the Bolshoi.
Film The Student directed by Kirill Serebrennikov with music by Ilya Demutsky won the François Chalais Prize at the 2016 Cannes Film Festival. As a film composer, Demutsky has worked extensively with Emmy-, TEFI- and Nika- award winning film director Sergey Miroshnichenko (Born in the USSR: 28 Up, Rings of the World, the official film of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games and others). He has also composed music for the opening ceremony of the 2014 Paralympic Games in Sochi.
Demutsky’s compositions are regularly performed by ensembles around the world, including the Clerestory Vocal Ensemble, the Subito Vocal Ensemble, the Pacific Mozart Ensemble, the San Francisco Conservatory Chorus, the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory Chorus, the Capella Taurida Chorus, the Smolny Cathedral Chamber Choir, the San Francisco Conservatory Orchestra, the Orpheus Radio Station Symphony Orchestra, the State Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Saint Petersburg State Academic Symphony Orchestra, the Teatro Comunale di Bologna Orchestra, the Belgorod State Symphony Orchestra and others
Demutsky is the laureate of the International Composition Competition «2 Agosto» (Bologna, 2013), the Jim Highsmith Composition Competition (San Francisco, 2008), the International Prokofiev Composition Competition (Saint Petersburg, 2012), the Tikhon Khrennikov Composition Competition (Lipetsk, 2013) and many others.
After graduating from Glinka Choir College, Demutsky earned his master’s degree in choral conducting from Saint Petersburg State Conservatory. Between 2007 and 2009, he studied composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music with David Conte. Demutsky has been an active performer in various choral societies of St. Petersburg and San Francisco, as well as a conductor of choirs and instrumental ensembles. Demutsky is also an artistic director of the award-winning Cyrillique Ensemble.

World premiere of Ilya Demutsky "Hero of Our Time", choreographed by Yuri Posokhova and directing Kirill Serebrennikov, held at the Bolshoi Theatre in the 239th season, the expected audience success, critical acclaim and the title of best ballet performance of "Golden Mask" National Theatre Award. Two years later, the same team of authors present a new world premiere of the ballet dedicated to the fate of the legendary dancer Ilya Nureyev.
Rudolf Khametovich Nureyev was a Soviet ballet dancer and choreographer. He was director of the Paris Opera Ballet from 1983 to 1989 and its chief choreographer until October 1992.
Named Lord of the Dance, Rudolf Nureyev is regarded as one of ballet's most gifted male dancers.
In addition to his technical prowess, Rudolf Nureyev was an accomplished choreographer. He produced his own interpretations of numerous classical works, including Swan Lake, Giselle, and La Bayadère.
Rudolf Nureyev had his early career with the Mariinsky Ballet in St. Petersburg. He defected from the Soviet Union to the West in 1961, despite KGB efforts to stop him. This was the first defection of a Soviet artist during the Cold War and it created an international sensation.
He went on to dance with The Royal Ballet in London and from 1983 to 1989 served as director of the Paris Opera Ballet.
