Muammar Gaddafi Interviewed Just Before Libyan Revolution

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bUhZmO6P0NU

In this rare interview shot in February 2010 - less than two years before he was killed while hiding in a culvert - Muammar Gaddafi tells presenter George Negus he's always merely represented the will of the people.

"For 40 years I have not been the ruler, the authority has been with the people," says Gaddafi calmly. Surrounded by security guards and local TV crews in a library of his military compound, which was bombed by the Americans back in 1986, Gaddafi gives an air of quiet confidence. He continues to deny responsibility in the Lockerbie bombing and advocates a one-state solution to the Israel and Palestine conflict. He also comments on Libya's nuclear programme, and shares his opinions on terrorism and democracy. Quizzed by Negus about his softened image, Gaddafi responds that "It is the world that has changed."

Two sides to the man who hit the international charts in the 20th Century. Idi Amin has been called the Butcher of Uganda. His rule as the 3rd president of Uganda was characterised by the persecution of minority groups, torture and exalted self imposed title such as " Lord of All the Beasts of the Earth and Fishes of the Seas and Conqueror of the British Empire in Africa in General and Uganda in Particular".  However the 6'4 ft. Amin was also a charming populist leader, a musician, a proficient swimmer and a caring father who at various stages won over his people and the West alike.

Saudi Arabia - a key ally of the UK and America - has been ruled as an absolute monarchy since its foundation. Any opposition in the country is often brutally oppressed. BBC Arabic has been investigating allegations the Saudi monarchy has operated a system of illegal abduction and capture of dissident princes who have criticised the government, including evidence of princes kidnapped in Europe and forced back to Saudi Arabia, where they've not been heard from since. Reda El Mawy reports.

Newsnight is the BBC's flagship news and current affairs TV programme - with analysis, debate, exclusives, and robust interviews.

Mohammad bin Salman was designated as Saudi Arabia's new crown prince in June 2017. Since then, he has rapidly consolidated power and led Saudi Arabia towards some progressive reforms, such as granting women the right to drive. He also has plans to privatize certain segments of the economy, with the goal of reducing Saudi Arabia's economic dependency on oil. These changes, along with a suppression of Saudi Arabia's religious Right, could potentially begin to destabilize one of the Middle East's most powerful nations.
