With the weather in their favour on Tuesday there could be no better day for the royals to enjoy the Queen's first annual garden party of the season.
Held at the first Buckingham Palace, the Queen's 8,000 guests thronged to catch a glimpse of the royals on duty which included the Duke of Edinburgh, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Princess Beatrice, the Earl of Wessex, Princess Anne, the Duke of Kent and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent.
Kate chatted to Andrew Bates and his wife, Janet, about her sister Pippa's wedding at the weekend - and revealed that while she was hugely looking forward to it, she was slightly nervous about how her children, Prince George, three, and two-year-old Princess Charlotte would behave as well.
Mr Bates. 55, from Coventry said: 'She said that they were all really looking forward to her sister's wedding at the weekend but she was a bit worried about how her children might behave.
'She said she was hopeful that they would be good but you never know at that age.'
Prince George, three, will be a page boy and Princess Charlotte, two, a bridesmaid for their aunty on Saturday
Mrs Bates was invited to the garden party as he has worked on the sound for the Queen's speech and other major royal events for the past 28 years.
'She was really interested in that, particularly when I explained that I had never been to Buckingham Place outside of work. The Duchess wondered how it felt to be on the other side of the fence. ' he said.
Kate receycled a blue satin coat from Scottish designer Christopher Kane which she had previously been seen wearing for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh are hosting a garden party at Buckingham Palace today.
Every summer, the Queen hosts up to three garden parties at her London residence, as well as one at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh.
Guests at Tuesday’s party can expect the usual spread of tea, cakes and sandwiches, served by some 400 waiting staff.
Approximately 8,000 guests attend each garden party, and people from all walks of life are invited on the recommendation of a number of national organisations which submit lists on a pre-arranged quota.
At a typical garden party, around 27,000 cups of tea, 20,000 sandwiches and 20,000 slices of cake are consumed.
The Duke, who is due to retire from public duties in the autumn, is set to attend the regular garden parties in London on Tuesday, then on May 23 and June 1, and in Edinburgh on July 4.
The Queen has given permission for three extra garden parties to be held at Buckingham Palace this year, with Prince Harry hosting one solo for the first time.
Former soldier Harry will join current and former members of the military at the annual Not Forgotten Association Garden Party on May 30.
