Kabuki actors parade for new theater

About 60 kabuki actors took part in a parade through Tokyo's Ginza district
Wednesday to mark the completion of the new Kabuki-za theater complex.
Many people cheered the actors--a lineup that included
Nakamura Tokizo, Ichikawa Ennosuke, Ichikawa Ebizo, Nakamura Kankuro and
Nakamura Shichinosuke--as they walked about 400 meters along Ginza-dori avenue on a cool, rainy
morning.
"A new page in
the 400-year-old history of kabuki is about to open," kabuki actor Sakata
Tojuro, chairman of the Japan Actors' Association, said at a ceremony.
"Your continued
warm support for kabuki and the new Kabuki-za theater will be
appreciated," he said.
Workers who helped
build the new theater complex led the parade, waving matoi poles with ornaments
used by firefighters in the Edo period
(1603-1867), and singing traditional workers songs.
The rebuilding of the
Kabuki-za theater took about three years.
