Carl XVI Gustaf (full name: Carl Gustaf Folke Hubertus, born
30 April 1946) is the reigning King of Sweden since 15 September 1973,
succeeding his grandfather King Gustaf VI Adolf. He is the only son of the late
Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten, who died in 1947, and Princess
Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha.
The King's heir apparent, upon passage on 1 January 1980 of a new law
establishing absolute primogeniture (the first such law passed in European
history), is Crown Princess Victoria, the eldest child of the King and his
wife, Queen Silvia. He is also 203rd in the line of succession to the British
and other Commonwealth thrones.
King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia will pay a State Visit
to Croatia
on 16-18 April 2013 at the invitation of Croatian President Mr. Ivo Josipovic
and his wife Mrs. Tatjana Josipovic. The aim of the State Visit is to intensify
excellent relations between Sweden
and Croatia, which is
expected to become the 28th Member
State of the EU on 1 July
2013. In addition of state visit, a
Swedish business delegation will visit Croatia. Also it is expected that
with the king and queen, the state visit should attend and representatives of
the Swedish government.

His Majesty Carl XVI Gustaf and Her Majesty Queen Silvia
will be in Croatia for three days, but the visit will undoubtedly be of much
broader scope than the expected cultural and ceremonial functions might
indicate: talks will be held, business will be done, and we will all do well to
stay tuned in…
The King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia will
visit Croatia
from the 16th to the 18th of April, following the invitation of the Croatian
President. The aim of this State Visit is to strengthen successful cooperation
and ensure long lasting relations between Sweden
and Croatia
in many fields, including culture, trade, and social affairs.
During their visit Their Majesties will have an opportunity
to meet Croatian President Ivo Josipović, Prime Minister Zoran Milanović, and
Speaker of the Parliament Josip Leko. Swedish Minister of Foreign Affairs Carl
Bildt and Swedish Minister of the Environment Lena Ek will be in the official
delegation representing the Swedish Government. Minister Bildt and Minister Ek
will also have bilateral meetings with the Croatian Minister of Foreign and
European Affairs, the Minister of the Environment, and the Croatian Minister of
the Economy. Minister Bildt will also participate in a Swedish-Croatian seminar
on EU enlargement in the region, organised by the Institute for Development and
International Relations (IRMO) from Zagreb
and the Swedish Institute of International Affairs.
‘Business Sweden – The Swedish Trade and Invest Council’
will, in connection with the State Visit, lead a Swedish business delegation of
high ranking business leaders representing some twenty Swedish companies, who
will use the visit to explore the possibilities for further economic and
commercial cooperation with Croatia, and will seek out investment opportunities
which are expected to arise upon Croatia’s Accession. The business delegation
will include representatives of Ericsson, Securitas, Volvo, Saab, EKN, Fortum
and Electa, just to name a few. To discuss and explore the commercial and trade
opportunities, Business Sweden and the Croatian Employers’ Association will
host a business seminar entitled “Croatia’s EU Accession from a
Business Perspective – How Can Sweden and Croatia Be Partners?”
Several cultural events will be organised during the State
Visit as well. A Swedish Film Week, presenting modern Swedish film, will be
held from the 14th of April to the 23rd, at Kino Tuškanac in Zagreb. An exhibition will be opened at the
Atelier Meštrović in Zagreb,
displaying the works of the famous Swedish sculptor Carl Milles alongside the
works of his contemporary and acquaintance Ivan Meštrović. Their Majesties will
also meet Croatian students studying the Swedish language at the University of Zagreb’s Faculty of Philosophy – yet
another link between the two countries.
The last day of Their Majesties’ visit will be spent in
Zadar, where they will visit, among other sites, the Museum of Ancient Glass
and the famous sea-organ, as well as the wider region of Zadar. At the same
time, the business delegation will travel to Rijeka to explore a number of
business and investment opportunities, so as better to inform themselves about
the infrastructural projects that are of great significance, not only for
Croatia, but for the whole SEE region, such as the Rijeka Gateway Project and
the railway construction between Rijeka and the Croatian-Hungarian border.
As for us from SEE, we can only wish the large delegation a
warm welcome, believing in the good portent of this important State Visit so
close to Croatia’s
Accession date.
