Written by Claudia Lage and João Ximenes Braga, with collaborations by Chico Soares, Douglas Tourinho, Fernando Rebello, Vellego Jackie, Nina Crintzs and Maria Camargo, script supervision by Gilberto Braga, directed by Dennis Carvalho and core general direction of Vinicius Coimbra, it starrs Camila Pitanga and Marjorie Estiano as the main characters.In November 2013, Lado a Lado was prized as Best telenovela in the 2013 Emmy International

"Lado a Lado" the Brazilian production, winner of the 2013 International Emmy for Best Telenovela, will premiere on MundoFOX March 18 at 8/7c p.m. The critically acclaimed Globo series stars Camila Pitanga and Marjorie Estiano as two women from opposite sides of the social spectrum that form a friendship and bond that resists time. The story takes place during a critical time in the civil rights movement in Brazil where both of these women fight the status quo becoming revolutionary women. "Lado a Lado" will air on the Spanish-language network following the finale of "La Vida Sigue" which also starred Estiano. Brazilian soaps have been popular on the network and this new telenovela will not be an exception. SYNOPSIS: The idealistic and brave Isabel (Camila Pitanga) is the maid of a French lady who taught her the European language and manners, and was raised by her father, the former slave Afonso (Milton Gonçalves). In a samba gathering, she meets Zé Maria (Lazaro Ramos), a hard-working man who hides a secret: he is a capoeira player, an illegal martial art he hopes to see recognized. Laura (Marjorie Estiano) is the daughter of former coffee barons Assunção (Werner Schünemann) and Constância (Patrícia Pillar), but luxury and wealth does not impress her. Having her degree in Education, she finds fulfillment in teaching. Her mother is resistant to her revolutionary ways and puts all hope in Laura’s engagement to Edgar (Thiago Fragoso) as a means to ascend socially. Edgar is an upstanding man who has studied in Portugal to take over the business of his father, the cunning Senator Bonifácio (Cássio Gabus Mendes).
Fate brings these two women together at church: Laura is uncertain about her future with Edgar, and Isabel overflows with happiness waiting for Zé Maria. However, the capoeira player, willing to prevent an unfair action of the local police, gets involved in a fight that leads him to prison instead of the altar. Isabel´s pain brings her closer to Laura, who is anguished by the imminent arrival of a groom she practically doesn´t know and does not wish to marry, not knowing Edgar feels the same way. Left alone and with no where to go, Isabel moves with her father to the humble neighborhood Morro da Providência, the first favela of Rio, and is forced to live with the mischievousness of the envious Berenice (Sheron Menezzes), who will do anything to prevent her reunion with Zé Maria. Meanwhile, Laura and Edgar, fall madly in love, contrary to all expectations of an arranged marriage. Still weakened by the thought of been abandoned, Isabel is seduced by the bohemian Albertinho (Rafael Cardoso), Laura´s brother, who becomes fascinated by Isabel.
However, the romance is interrupted by the autocratic Constância. After leaving jail, Zé Maria finds Isabel pregnant with Albertinho’s child and breaks up with her. The situation worsens when Constância discovers the pregnancy. To avoid scandals, she separates the child from his mother with the help of Berenice. Suffering with the supposed death of her son and Zé Maria´s absence, Isabel decides to accept the invitation from a famous dancer and travels to Paris. Laura is blindsided when she finds out about a daughter of Edgar´s from a brief relationship he had in Portugal. She files for divorce and, with the disapproval of her mother, moves away to avoid embarrassment.
Six years later, the two friends return to Rio. Now a renowned dancer in Paris, Isabel discovers that her son is alive, while Laura, a divorced woman, devotes herself to teaching. Love holds good surprises: Zé Maria and Isabel, and Laura and Edgar, realize the difficulties have failed to destroy their feelings. Side by Side tells the story of two women ahead of their time, at a moment of great political and social transformations. With detailed scenography of old Rio, influenced by the Belle Époque, the telenovela puts different worlds side by side: luxury and simplicity; progress and prejudice.
CAST
Camila Pitanga (Isabel): A working woman who dreams of love and freedom. She has worked at the house of Madame Besançon (Beatriz Segall) since she was 14, and lives in the slum with her father, Afonso (Milton Gonçalves). Isabel is a woman ahead of her time. She loves Zé Maria (Lázaro Ramos), but her love will pass through many trials.
Lázaro Ramos (Zé Maria): A simple man, he works at the barbershop with Afonso (Milton Gonçalves). His abilities earned him the name of Zé Navalha (“navalha” meaning “razor” in Portuguese). A practitioner of capoeira, Zé will become involved in some disturbances and injustices, since capoeira at the time was synonymous with banditry and was prohibited by law. Despite his love for Isabel (Camila Pitanga), the two face many challenges.
Marjorie Estiano (Laura): A youth in love with books and the arts. Daughter of Constância (Patrícia Pillar), she doesn’t accept her mother’s reactionary ways and want to be independent and work, something impossible for a woman of her social class in the era. She teaches as a volunteer and will marry Edgar (Thiago Fragoso).
Thiago Fragosoo (Edgar): Son of a rich family, he went to study Law in Portugal. Upon returning to Brazil, he will help his father, Senator Bonifácio (Cassio Gabus Mendes) in his business. But his great passion was always journalism. A youth concerned with social injustices, who will marry Laura (Marjorie Estiano).
Patricia Pillar (Constancia): Even though she doesn’t bear the title of baroness, she has the face of one. A woman who lives for her family and spares no effort to protect it, even when that may harm others. She is always in conflicts with her daughter Laura (Marjorie Estiano), and will fight for her husband, Assunção (Werner Schünemann) to have prestige in his political career. She is the big villain of the story, although she believes that everything she does is for the good of Assunção (Werner Schünemann), Laura, and Albertinho (Rafael Cardoso).
Rafael Cardoso (Albertinho): Brother of Laura (Marjorie Estiano). He is a typical playboy, seducer, who doesn’t want anything to do with work or commitments. In addition to women, what he will really like is practicing a new sport which has recently arrived in the country, soccer. He will fall in love with Isabel (Camila Pitanga).
Sheron Menezzes (Berenice): She is jealous of Isabel (Camila Pitanga) about everything and, above all, for knowing how to read and speak French. Berenice resents herself for not being beautiful enough to get ahead in life. She wants to win Zé Maria’s (Lázaro Ramos) heart, motivated more by jealousy of Isabel than by passion.
