Hailemariam calls for Africans to play ‘proactive role’ at
historic OAU/AU golden jubilee summit
http://www.waltainfo.com/index.php/others/editors-pick/8344-hailemariam-calls-for-africans-to-play-proactive-role-at-historic-oauau-golden-jubilee-summit
Addis Ababa, May 25 (WIC) –
Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn of Ethiopia
and current Chairman of the African Union
called for Africans to play a proactive role in pushing forward the continent’s
transformation agenda.
In his opening speech at the historic 50th anniversary
celebration of the Organization of African Union (OAU), now the African Union
(AU), Hailemariam said the policy orthodoxy imposed on Africa from outside to
simply “get the prices right” did not help the continent to break the vicious
cycle of poverty and achieve sustainable economic growth.
“We have to do more than “getting the prices right” and play
a proactive role in pushing forward our transformation agenda taking due
cognizance of nature of our respective political economies and development
potentials,” Hailemariam said.
The AU chairman, who asked for the continued support and
solidarity of the continent’s partners, sought for an understanding for
Africans to charter their own development path.
“We seek their understanding to have the policy space to
design and implement our own development strategies based on the objective
realities of our countries and drawing valuable lessons from other successful
development experiences,” Hailemariam said.
He also outlined areas where Africa
should put its focus for the future - agricultural investment, building human
and technological capability, building infrastructure, creating a dynamic and
vibrant private sector and nurturing democratic governance and popular
participation.
At a time when many are predicting a bright future for
Africa, the continent is marking the 50th anniversary of the continental
organization in Addis Ababa, the birth place of
the OAU, where about 80 heads of states from Africa
and elsewhere are gathered.
The day was marked with a debate on the theme of the summit
“Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance”. Celebrations will continue throughout
the day with various events, including a dinner gala hosted by the Ethiopian
government.
The day also marks the beginning of year-long celebrations.

Hailemariam stresses the need to engage youth in Africa’s renaissance
http://www.waltainfo.com/index.php/others/editors-pick/8326-hailemariam-stresses-the-need-to-engage-youth-in-africas-renaissance
Addis Ababa, May 24 (WIC) – Ethiopian Prime Minister
Hailemariam Desalegn, current chairman of the African Union, said Africa’s
youth should be engaged and be part of the continent’s renaissance process.
Speaking at the Intergenerational Youth Forum held today at
the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) on the sidelines of
the 50th OAU/AU anniversary, Hailemariam stressed the need for governments to
engage the youth both at national and continental level.
Africa, the world’s
youngest continent with 65 percent of its population under the age of 35,
welcomes 10 million young Africans to the labor market each year. Providing
jobs for the youth has been a challenge for African governments.
Taking his country’s experience to curb unemployment,
Hailemariam said; “We have been able to address unemployment in Ethiopia with
an accelerated and sustained economic growth.”
“This year alone, we have created 2.3 million jobs through
Small and Micro Enterprises,” he said.
Kenya
newly elected President Uhuru Kenyatta, on his part, also stressed the need to
empower the youth for Africa to fully realize
its potential.
Uhuru said Africa’s youth should be part of Africa’s solution now, rather than only the future. He
singled out the youth’s talent in innovations which are already making their
mark in the continent.
The discussion was attended by former Zambian President
Kenneth Kaunda and Chairperson of African Union Commission, Dr. Dlamini Zuma,
as well as Dr. Carlos Lopes, Executive Secretary of UNECA.
At a heated dialogue, representatives of the continent’s
youth and children also had a chance to throw their questions to heads of
states of Liberia, Zambia, Senegal,
Mauritania,
and the Vice President of Botswana.
“The future is being defined by countries like Ethiopia”:
John Kerry
http://www.waltainfo.com/index.php/others/editors-pick/8355--the-future-is-being-defined-by-countries-like-ethiopia-john-kerry
Addis Ababa, May 26, 2013 (WIC) ¬ - Prime Minister
Hailemariam Desalegn held talks with the United States Secretary of State, John
Kerry on Saturday on bilateral and continental issues.
After the discussion, the Secretary along with his Ethiopian
counterpart Tedros Adhanom briefed journalists on the essence of their
discussion. The discussion between the two has focused on bilateral issues of
economic development and regional peace and security.
He said that Ethiopia
has been a very strong partner of the United
States and commended it for its significant contribution
to peace and security in the continent, particularly in Sudan South Sudan and Somalia.
“With respect to the economic growth…Ethiopia is one
of the ten fastest growing countries of the world. It is a double digit growth.
It is a quite extraordinary story. So, the US
private sectors need to focus on Ethiopia and recognize the
opportunities that are here. And hopefully we can encourage more companies to
come here and engage,” he said.
Talking about the economic success registered in Ethiopia over the past decade, Kerry said, “I
think the future is being defined by countries like Ethiopia,
future of Africa which we are celebrating in
this 50th Anniversary today”.
Kerry stated that
“there has been enormous transition over the last 50 years” in the continent
and “many more transitions in democracy” in Africa that countries like China,
Brazil, India , Russia, Japan and others are moving in taking the advantage of the growth and
development. He also admitted that “the US has been behind on that, we need
to change that,” he said.
He also expressed that his government would support Ethiopia’s
accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Foreign Minister Tedros Adhanom for his part said Ethiopia is effectively using the support from
the US
in the health sector.
He said the two sides have had a very successful discussion
on bilateral and regional issues.
23rd Ordinary Session of AU Executive Council Kicks off
http://www.waltainfo.com/index.php/others/editors-pick/8290-23rd-ordinary-session-of-au-executive-council-kicks-off
Addis Ababa, May 23, 2013
(WIC) - Ethiopian Foreign Minister Dr. Tedros Adhanom said on Wednesday Africa should build up on its achievements as it strives
to advance the continent’s transformation agenda for the next decades.
Tedros made the remark at the opening session of the 23rd
Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of the African Union at its
Headquarters.
“I believe our priorities should be to ensure lasting peace
and security. Deepen governance reforms as well as accelerate economic growth
and industrialization with a view to laying a solid foundation for Africa’s renaissance,” Tedros said.
He stated that the 50th anniversary of OAU/AU is a time of
celebrating past achievements and reflecting on the challenges and shortcomings
of the continent.
African Union Commission Chairperson, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini
Zuma for her part said “we will reclaim the African narrative as we reflect on
the past, assess our present state and plan for our future.”
She stated that the debates by Africans from all walks
reaffirm pan Africanism as a lodestar, a guide to action and the foundations
for Africa’s Renaissance. She stressed the
need to be mindful of the inputs from African peoples as they reflect on the
50th Anniversary Proclamation.
Speaking on the occasion, UN Under-Secretary-General and
Executive Secretary of ECA Carlos Lopez underlined the need for Africa to review the nature of its relations with all
others in the international community. Africans have to take control of the
narratives about this continent, he said.
The two-day meeting of the Executive Council of the AU is
expected to make a through deliberation on “Pan Africanism and African
Renaissance”, the theme of the Summit.
According to ERTA, the meeting will discuss, among others,
the draft Proclamation on 50thAnniversary of OAU/AU which will be adopted
during the 21st Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and
Government.

Organizacija afričkog jedinstva je organizacija osnovana 25.
svibnja 1963. u gradu Adis Abebi.
Osnovana je radi borbe za potpunu dekolonizaciju Afrike, ali
i za ujedinjenje i suradnju zemalja Afrike na svim područjima ljudske
djelatnosti. Poticanje suradnje među afričkim državama pretvara OAJ u ekonomsku
integraciju koja teži stvaranju jedinstvenoga afričkog tržišta, bez
protekcionističkih i drugih ograničenja u međunarodnoj trgovini.
i Europskoj uniji. Među najvećim izazovima s kojima će se trebati suočiti, na
kontinentu koji ima više od 830 milijuna stanovnika, od kojih njih 60% ima
manje od 20 godina, jest, sad već kronična, politička nestabilnost.
