Drama critic of The Guardian since October 1971, he is "Britain's longest-serving theatre critic" and the author of biographical and critical studies relating to British theatre and the arts; most notably, he is the authorised biographer of the playwright Harold Pinter (1930–2008)

Sir Nicholas Robert Hytner (born 7 May 1956) is the Director of London's National Theatre (until March 2015) and a theatre, film and opera director whose major successes include Miss Saigon, The History Boys and One Man, Two Guvnors.
In April 2013, he announced that he would step down as Director of the National Theatre at the end of March 2015. In his role as Director of National Theatre, he appeared on the Cultural Exchange as part of the Radio Four programme Front Row, where he chose The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart as his work of art.

The Juilliard School in New York will confer honorary doctorate degrees on directors Peter Sellars and Nicholas Hytner during its commencement ceremony in May.
Honorary degrees also will be given to dancer Suzanne Farrell, jazz artist Dianne Reeves and pianist-conductor Murray Perahia, the school announced Thursday.
