On 14 April 2013, Maduro became the newly elected President
of Venezuela, narrowly defeating Henrique Capriles, with 1.5% of the vote
separating the two candidates. Capriles demanded a recount, refusing to
recognize the outcome as valid
Maduro's partner is Cilia Flores, a lawyer within the Fifth
Republic Movement (MVR) who replaced Maduro as Speaker of the Assembly in
August 2006, when he was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs; she was the
first woman to serve as president of the National Assembly (2006–2011)
