GERMAN FRENCH Tannhauser: Wagner's opera based on the two German legends of Tannhauser and the song contest at Wartburg. The story centers on the struggle between sacred and profane love, and redemption through love. Performed in German and French with Russian subtitles. Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater. 6:30 p.m.

 

The Golden Cockerel (Zolotoi Petushok): Kirill Serebrennikov's updated staging of Rimsky-Korsakov's satirical opera based on Pushkin's verse tale. Bolshoi Theater New Stage. 7 p.m.

Friday The 9th

FESTIVAL Moscow Easter: MT PICK ITALIAN Il Trovatore: the concert version of Verdi's tragic opera performed by the Mariinsky Theater Symphony Orchestra and the Academy of Young Opera Singers Ensemble. Soloists Anna Netrebko (soprano), Yekaterina Semenchuk (mezzo-soprano), Ovanes Aivazyan (tenor), Alexei Markov (baritone), conductor Valery Gergiev. Conservatory Great Hall. 7 p.m.

Opera Night: arias, duets, jam. Kozlov Club. 11 p.m.

ITALIAN La Traviata: Verdi's opera as staged by Alexander Titel. Performed in Italian with Russian subtitles. Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater. 7 p.m.

 

Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra, the Masters of Choral Song Choir, Yelena Obraztsova (mezzo-soprano), Dinara Alieva (soprano), Vasily Ladyuk (baritone), Mikhail Kolelishvili (bass),и (tenor) and others perform arias and Russian songs. Marcello Rota conducts. Conservatory Great Hall. 7 p.m.

I Quattro Rusteghi (The Four Curmudgeons, Chetyre Samodura): Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari's opera based on Goldoni's comedy. Performed in Russian. Pokrovsky Chamber Musical Theater. 7 p.m.

 

ITALIAN L'Italiana in Algeri (Italyanka v Alzhire): Rossini's operatic drama staged by Yevgeny Pisarev. Performed in Italian with Russian subtitles. Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theater. 7 p.m.

Wednesday The 14th

 

I Quattro Rusteghi (see Tues. listing). Pokrovsky Chamber Musical Theater. 7 p.m.

The Tsar's Bride (Tsarskaya Nevesta): This concise and passionate version of Rimsky-Korsakov's opera is a grim tale of love and vengeance connected in part with the true story of the bloody intrigues surrounding Ivan the Terrible's search for a new bride in 1572. NEW The School for Wives (Shkola Zhyon): Vladimir Martynov's opera buffa based on Moliere's comedy about a middle-aged man who battles a young rival for the attentions of his pretty ward. Director Yury Lyubimov's libretto also includes aphorisms by Kozma Prutkov and texts from Moliere's "The Bourgeois Gentleman." Sets by Boris Messerer, costumes by Rustam Khamdamov. Novaya Opera.
