Margaret Herrick (September 27, 1902-June 21, 1976), was the librarian and director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Herrick is generally credited with naming the Academy Award an "Oscar", declaring the statuettes "looked just like my Uncle Oscar". However, others, including Academy President Bette Davis and Hollywood gossip columnist Sidney Skolsky, have claimed they invented the name.

She was born in Spokane, Washington, United States. Her maiden name was Margaret Buck. Margaret graduated from the University of Washington. She was librarian of Yakima, Washington. After marrying Donald Gledhill, an assistant to the executive secretary of the Academy, she moved to Hollywood, California in 1931 and ultimately became the Academy's first librarian. She served in that capacity until 1943, when she became the interim executive director of the Academy, replacing her husband. She and Gledhill divorced in 1945. In 1946 she was offered the Executive Director position permanently, and she held it until her retirement in January 1971. She married Philip A. Herrick in 1946, and continued to use his name professionally following their divorce in 1951.The Academy's extensive library in Beverly Hills, California, of material on films is named in her honor. She died in Woodland Hills, California

Academy Awards

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Awards

The Academy Awards or The Oscars (the official title was rebranded as The Oscars in 2013 – changed from The Academy Awards) is an annual American awards ceremony honoring cinematic achievements in the film industry. The various category winners are awarded a copy of a statuette, officially the Academy Award of Merit, that is better known by its nickname Oscar. The awards, first presented in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, are overseen by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

The awards ceremony was first televised in 1953 and is now seen live in more than 200 countries. The Oscars is also the oldest entertainment awards ceremony; its equivalents, the Emmy Awards for television, the Tony Awards for theatre, and the Grammy Awards for music and recording, are modeled after the Academy Awards. The Academy Awards are widely considered to be the most prestigious cinema awards ceremony in the world.

The 86th Academy Awards ceremony was held on March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, later than usual as to not clash with the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. The 87th Academy Awards is scheduled for February 22, 2015. Historically given during the first quarter of the new year, the awards honor achievements for cinematic accomplishments for the preceding year. This lends confusion when chronologically describing the awards. For example, 12 Years a Slave was awarded Best Picture for 2013, although the Oscar ceremony was conducted in 2014.

Since 1929, the Academy Awards has been the biggest night in the showbiz calendar. And who looks the best on the red carpet has become as hotly contested as who takes home the Oscars.

Leading ladies nominated for Best Actress are under the most pressure to pull off a look that will make them look stylish and glamorous.

Upon winning, their name goes down in history and pictures of them proudly clutching the gold statue are published worldwide so choosing the right dress is a must.
