Washington, D.C. – Speaker Nancy Pelosi issued the following statement on the passage of a bicameral, bipartisan resolution opposing the President’s decision in Syria, which passed the House today by a vote of 354 to 60. The resolution, H.J. Res. 77, is being led by House Committee on Foreign Affairs Chairman Eliot Engel (D-NY) and House Committee on Foreign Affairs Ranking Member Michael McCaul (R-TX) and by Senate Foreign Relations Committee Ranking Member Robert Menendez (D-NJ) and Senate Foreign Relations Committee Member Todd Young (R-IN):
“The President unleashed an escalation of chaos and insecurity in Syria when he gave Turkey the green light to attack our Kurdish partners – threatening lives, risking regional security and undermining America’s credibility as a trustworthy ally. The House and Senate, Democrats and Republicans, have now come together with one voice to reject the President’s dangerous, disastrous actions in Syria and demonstrate the strong, smart leadership that has sorely been lacking from the White House.
“The President’s decision has forced more than 250,000 civilians to flee their homes, caused the death of scores of innocent men, women and children and led to the jailbreak of nearly 800 ISIS supporters and family members, with the possibility of several thousands more escaping. The only winners from this decision are ISIS, the Syrian Government, Iran and Russia. All roads seem to lead to Putin with the President.
“Together, the Congress calls on President Trump to support Kurdish communities, to work to ensure that the Turkish military acts with restraint and to present a clear strategy to defeat ISIS. There is no strategy right now from the White House for ISIS, Syria or the region. The House will continue to take action to honor the sacrifice of our military and our allies and to restore sanity and strength to our national security.”
