Colleagues shocked after popular fitness trainer plunges
from JLT tower

Colleagues of a much-loved personal trainer and fitness
instructor spoke of their devastation on Sunday after he died in a fall from a Dubai tower block.
Elwood Macilwraith, 29, plunged from the Laguna Tower
in Dubai’s JLT
in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The Brit, who grew up in Hull, worked at the nearby Smart Fitness gym,
where colleagues and patrons said they were “in a state of shock” on Sunday.
The circumstances surrounding his death are not yet clear. Elwood had only just
got married in February and his wife, who he had met in Dubai, had raised the alarm after the
tragedy.
A colleague told 7DAYS: “We do not know exactly what
happened and, obviously, there is a police inquiry. We are waiting to find out.
“Elwood came here just over two years ago and started
working with the gym when it opened. He was a very popular guy and got results
with his clients. He was good at his job. We can only think that this has been
a tragic accident. There is no other reason for it. He was deliriously happy in
his work and with his wife.”
Elwood’s co-workers were told of the tragedy by his wife
soon after it happened. The colleague said: “We are like family here. Our
priority at the moment is with his wife. I can only imagine how it is for his
family.”
Elwood’s family has remained in the UK and it is believed they will travel to Dubai once there is some
firm news from the police inquiry. His colleague said: “The British Embassy are
supporting us and are
liaising with the police.
“We have been told it will take as long as it will take and
we just have to be patient.” Management at the Movenpick Hotel, which adjoins
the Laguna Tower,
confirmed the tragic incident. A spokesman said: “We can
confirm there was an unfortunate incident in the early hours of Saturday
morning.”
A source in Dubai Police told 7DAYS that they recorded the
death of a British man in his 20s in the JLT area without giving further
details. The source said the incident was still under investigation.
