At Yale University, President Josipović gave a lecture on the topic “Music and Politics” that included his personal experience as well as universal civilisation relationship between art, music specifically, and politics. “Politicians can use music to spread peace, not hatred”, stated the Croatian President and, based on his own experience of a politician and musician, pointed out that these two activities link creativity, vision, communication, balance between freedom and discipline. Linking theory and history with his personal experience, President Josipović emphasised that music acts “as a mirror of society” and politicians can use it to reconcile with other nations and strengthen national identity. “During the Presidential campaign, I gathered well-known artists at concerts, and the concerts of friendship in Croatia, Slovenia and Italy, which I attended together with the Slovenian and the Italian Presidents contributed to the process of reconciliation between our nations”, emphasised the Croatian President. The President reminded that Nazis abused the music of the German composer Richard Wagner to spread their destructive ideology as an example of using music in a negative context.
“I want to present Croatia of course, our way of thinking, and get closer to the academic community. What resulted from a number of lectures on this and some other topics at prestigious universities of the world was comprehensive cooperation with our universities. I understand this in the first place as a bridge between academic communities and an opportunity to draw some benefit from it and strengthen our cooperation”, emphasised The President prior to the lecture held at School of Music of Yale University.
