"I would like the economic relations to reach the level of the political ones. (...) The transport link between Romania and Croatia, Zagreb and Bucharest respectively, is important, and as regards the Danube region we consider that Croatia has not fully used the potential of the Danube corridor," said Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

As to energy cooperation, the Croatian president underscored that Romania was one of the countries that have done a lot regarding energy independence; she declared that one of Croatia's objectives was to make the terminal on the Krk Island one of the most important such facilities.

"From an energy standpoint, Croatia is interested in all Romania's projects, including the upgrading of hydropower stations, but also the IT and modern technologies," said the Croatian president.

Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic estimated that Romania and Croatia had similar problems in terms of the fight against corruption and for a stronger judiciary system, for social security and for the reform of the healthcare, pension and education systems.

Croatia's president highlighted that the discussions with her Romanian counterpart also referred to demographics and keeping young people in the two countries.

Moreover, the discussions dwelt on Romania's experience in the EU, the cooperation within the Union, the threats to modern societies and the issue of minorities in the two countries.

"The Romanian community and the Croatian minority in Romania have a very good position and are represented in Parliament. (...) It is a connection bridge between our countries and we can further discuss for minorities to be able to preserve their traditions and language," the President asserted.

She added that President Iohannis supports Croatia's initiative to discuss in the EU Council the enlargement of the EU towards the Balkans.

President Iohannis: Romania, Croatia would have only to win from Western Balkans European integration

President Klaus Iohannis said on Monday night that Romania and Croatia would have only to win on several plans from the European integration of the Western Balkan countries.

'The bilateral relations between our countries have constantly and well developed in the last years, in particular after the EU integration. There are bridges between Romania and Croatia which we should capitalize for our states and our citizens. We are connected by our belonging to the EU, the NATO, the South-Eastern Europe and the Danube region, as well as our interest in strengthening the European outlook of the states of the Western Balkan region. (...) I believe that both Romania and Croatia would have only to win on multiple plans, from economic development to regional stability, as a result of the European integration of the Western Balkans,' said Klaus Iohannis, after a meeting with his Croatian counterpart, Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic.

He emphasized that 'a secure, prosperous region is in the benefit of all.'

The Romanian head of state showed that he discussed with the President of Croatia about the economic situation of the two countries, reviewing the cooperation opportunities and solutions; the bridging role of the minorities in the two countries — for whom they agreed to continue cooperation in education; the collaboration within the EU; and the evolutions in the Eastern neighbourhood, namely in Ukraine and the Republic of Moldova.
