Senior members of the royal family have at arrived at Kensington Palace to celebrate the Duchess of Cambridge's 38th birthday amid an ongoing crisis after Prince Harry and Meghan's bombshell announcement last night. Kate Middleton (left) was among those seen arriving at the palace this morning along with Prince Eugenie (inset) with celebrations set to be tempered by decision of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex (right) to step back from family roles. Royal sources today claimed Prince Harry had ignored crystal-clear orders from the Queen after she instructed him not to announce that both he and Meghan were stepping down from their roles as senior royals. The couple 'pressed the nuclear button' on their royal careers last night by announcing they are quitting their frontline roles, despite the wishes of the Queen that they delay the announcement. Royal sources claim that the Queen had made an explicit request to her grandson that the bombshell revelation be put on hold until after a meeting with Her Majesty at Sandringham.

Why the Queen must FIRE Their Royal Hustlers: Deluded Meghan and Harry should be stripped of their titles before this pair of grasping, selfish, scheming Kardashian-wannabes bring down the Monarchy, says PIERS MORGAN

Who the f**k do they think they are? Seriously? I've seen some disgraceful royal antics in my time, but for pure arrogance, entitlement, greed, and wilful disrespect, nothing has ever quite matched the behaviour of the 'Duke and Duchess of Sussex', writes PIERS MORGAN. I put inverted commas around those titles because I sincerely hope they won't exist much longer. Indeed, if I were Her Majesty the Queen, I would unceremoniously strip Harry and Meghan of all their titles with immediate effect and despatch them back into civilian life. These two deluded clowns announced yesterday they were quitting life as senior royals. In a series of staggeringly pompous statements on their gleaming new Hollywood-style website, they laid down the law to the Queen and to the rest of us about exactly how things are supposedly going to work from this moment on.

Meghan WHO? The Queen and Prince Charles wish Kate Middleton 'a very Happy 38th Birthday... before Prince Harry and Meghan Markle post a short message to her

The Royal Family put on a show of unity today as they wished Kate 'a very happy birthday' in the wake of Prince Harry and Meghan's bombshell announcement. The Queen, Prince Philip, Prince Charles and Camilla took the chance to boost the Duchess of Cambridge's profile as a royal female figurehead as she turned 38. Their birthday messages celebrated how she has become a central member of the Royal Family and a perfect Queen-in-waiting since marrying Prince William in 2011. Their joyful posts featuring emojis formed part of a fightback against the family being undercut by Prince Harry and Meghan who quit as senior royals last night. The @RoyalFamily (top right) and @ClarenceHouse (bottom left) accounts both posted birthday messages, while Kensington Palace released a new photograph of Kate (left, in Norfolk) to mark the occasion. The Sussex Royal Instagram account for Harry and Meghan also posted a message (bottom centre), saying: 'Wishing a very happy birthday to the Duchess of Cambridge today'.

Royal aides said they had pressed the 'nuclear button' making their intentions known in the six paragraph declaration posted on their new sussexroyal.com website just days after returning from a six-week break in Canada with their son Archie. the shock announcement, posted at around 6.30pm last night, has left more questions than answers. Who helped them come to this decision, what exactly does it mean when they say they want to be financially independent, and how will they split their time between North America and Britain? Here MailOnline looks in detail at the 195 word statement and what it means for the royal family, Britain, and the many charities they support.
