Putin to get royal welcome from Macron at Versailles despite rift over Syria and cyberattacks

Emmanuel Macron is to host Russia's Vladimir Putin at the palace of Versailles next Monday for an exhibition marking 300 years of Franco-Russian diplomatic ties, amid strained relations between the two nations.

France and Russia have been at odds on Syria and Moscow's backing of President Bashar al-Assad. France has also been one of the key European Union countries to push for sanctions on Russia over the Ukraine crisis.

The surprise visit to inaugurate the exhibition celebrating the 1717 visit of Peter the Great to France comes after complaints from the Macron camp that Russia was involved in a string of hack attacks against his campaign headquarters ahead of his May 7 election…….

…..Mr Macron will meet Mr Putin at the Grand Trianon, part of the sumptuous estate of the palace of Versailles, for an exhibition organised in conjunction with the Hermitage Museum in St Petersburg.

From 30 May to 24 September 2017, this exhibition will be dedicated to the stay of Peter the Great in Paris and at the Palace of Versailles in May and June 1717, celebrating the tercentenary of his trip in France.

Thanks to a partnership between the Palace of Versailles and the State Hermitage Museum in St-Petersburg, the exhibition will present what was one of the major diplomatic and cultural event at the beginning of Louis XV's reign only two years after Louis XIV's death.

the exhibition

Visitors will be able to follow step by step Peter the Great's stay in the Palace of Versailles. Heir of the Romanov dynasty and first Emperor of Russia, Peter Ist was looking for inspiration in the French political model. He was curious and keen on sciences and techniques therefore Peter Ist visited many royal residences, manufactures and parisian academies, met with great scientists and artists in order to attract some of them to the Court in St-Petersburg. Paintings, sculptures, pieces of furniture, engravings, drawings, books from the Tsar private library and objects from his cabinet of curiosities will paint the portrait of a man who has been a great reformer for Russia, looking towards the West and particularly to the France of the Great Century.

The exhibition called «Peter the Great, a Tsar in France. 1717» will be on display in the Grand Trianon from 30 May to 24 September 2017. It is dedicated to Tsar Peter the Great’s trip in and around Paris in May and June 1717, and will commemorate the 300th anniversary of this diplomatic visit. The fruit of exceptional collaboration between the Palace of Versailles and the Hermitage Museum, the exhibition will present over 150 works including paintings, sculptures, decorative artworks and tapestries, as well as plans, medallions, scientific instruments, books and manuscripts, two thirds of which belong to the collections of the prestigious museum in Saint Petersburg.

A member of the house of Romanov and son of Tsar Alexis Mikhailovich (1645-1676) and Nataliya Naryshkina (1651 – 1694), Peter I (1672-1725) embarked on a second journey to the West 20 years after the « Grand Embassy » which took him to Europe for the first time in 1697-1698. He arrived in France on 21 April 1717 and remained until 21 June. He stayed at Versailles twice and was accommodated in the Grand Trianon, from 24 to 26 May and from 3 to 11 June 1717. The exhibition visit will lead visitors step by step through the trip which, although official, nonetheless allowed a certain amount of freedom since Peter I, being little accustomed to French Etiquette and with his imposing figure and unpredictability, departed from protocol on multiple occasions. His encounter with Louis XV particularly shocked onlookers when, flouting the ceremonial custom of the court, he spontaneously took the young king, aged 7, in his arms. A number of memorialists, including Saint-Simon, the Marquis de Dangeau and Jean Buvat, left precious testimonies allowing us to retrace the journey.

Although there were political and economic aims to the stay, such as a project for an alliance with France against Sweden and the signature of a trade agreement, the reforming Tsar and founder of modern Russia most particularly wanted to see the finest of France in order to adapt certain models for his own empire. During the two months that Peter the Great spent in Regency Paris, his visits and discussions with French people provided him with food for thought and had an influence on the works he started in 1703 in Saint Petersburg and the surrounding area.

Emmanuel 1er et Vladimir le Grand à Versailles : un parfum "gaullo-mitterrandien"

http://tempsreel.nouvelobs.com/monde/20170528.OBS9967/emmanuel-1er-et-vladimir-le-grand-a-versailles-un-parfum-gaullo-mitterrandien.html

PARIS (AP) — The Latest on Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to France (all times local):

9:35 p.m.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has visited a newly built Russian Orthodox Church near the Seine River in Paris.

The Russian government owns the church, the gold-domed centerpiece of a 100 million euros ($112 million) Orthodox Spiritual and Cultural Center that includes a school.

Putin shook hands with Bishop Nestor of Chersonese, the representative of the Moscow Patriarch in France. He then kissed an icon and lit a candle.

The Russian president was a champion of building a new Russian church in Paris. Human rights groups opposed the project when it first was approved in 2008.
