L.v Beethoven, op 5 No 2
first performed in Berlin
dedicated King Friedrich Wilhelm II.one of the very few monarchs who doen‘t have
beeb busy in wars, but estimates arts.
He, himself was cellist, taught by Jean-Louis Duport, the"Hofcellist"of
the King.
Beethoven, himself at the piano with cellist Duport, first
performed this sonata.
Boettcher, himself was giving short introductions of all the
pieces he was going to perform.
Franz Liszt, Elegie No 1
he memorized a concert as a young member of Berlin
Philharmonic orchestra under the direction of Paul Hindemith, where Hindemith
considered Liszt as one of the most influencing and important composers at all.
As a renewer of harmonic techinques Liszt could be mentioned
as a sort of"teacher"of Wagner, who integrates harmonic patterns from
Liszt into his operas.
The Elegie No 1 initiates the harmonic tonalities of the
following 20 th century.
C. Debussy, Sonata No 3
Debussy was planing to compose 6 sonatas for solo
instruments(with and without piano accompaniment)but he was able to fulfill
only 3
Shortly after fnishing this cello sonata, one of the most
important and outstanding works of that time,Debussy passed away.
under the manuscript of this oeuvre it is marked " p m
"......long time musicologists identified he letters as "post
mortem",but as Debussy dedicated the masterpiece to his beloved wife,"p
m " means nothing else than"petite mienne"-"small
mine"
L.v.Beethoven, Sonate op 69
before Beethoven no composer has given attention the cello
as solo instrument.Beethoven dedicated the Sonata his close friend the
Breisgauer cellist Ignaz Baron von Gleichenstein,
but they never performed it together because of falling in
love both for the same Lady......Czerny and Linke first performed the sonata in
1812.
When Beethoven began to compose this work he already knew
that he was going to loose his hearing but spoke his famous words:"ich
werde meinem Schicksal in den Rachen greifen!"
in continuing with the disease he could not hear already the
op 69 anymore.
in the first movement second part we suddenly are aware a
citation of the aria"es ist vollbracht"of the"Johannes
Passion"from Bach in the cello part and the piano citates the viola da
gamba part of the Bach s version.
how could that be?at this time, the both
"passions"from Bach were not yet performed, later on it was
Mendelssohn,who re-discovered,published and performed them...
The solution must be the fact, that Beethovens teacher was a
former student of Bach.......one of the various little miracles of music.....
F.Chopin,Introduction et Polonaise Brillante op.3
Chopin, the exclusive composer for the piano?
yes and no.apart from one piano trio he wrote 3 compositions
for cello and piano.,a sonata,a duo about themes of the opera "Robert the
Devil"from Giacomo Meyerbeer and the Polonaise Brillante.
Inspired by the french cellist Auguste Franchomme with whom
Chopin performed several times in Paris
he was secretly supported by Franchomme, who was(citation of Wolfgang
Boettcher"generous and aristocratic as we cellists are"!),paying all
the bills for Chopin’ s numerous stays in hospitals.
Boettcher’s impressive recital finished under branding
applause, with Ravel’ s "Pièce en forme de Habanera" and the slow
movement from Schuberts"Arpeggione".
