BRAIN ACTIVITY IN DYING RATS SHEDS LIGHT ON MYSTERY

Studying the brain activity of dying rats may have shed light on the mystery of human near death experiences.

Researchers at the University of Michigan back in 2013 analysed the electrical signals in the brains of nine anaesthetised rats having an induced cardiac arrest.

They observed activity patterns associated with 'a hyper-alerted state' shortly after clinical death.

The study's authors said near death experiences (NDEs) were reported by 20 per cent of cardiac arrest survivors.

People often claim they are evidence of an afterlife or the separation of the body and the soul.

But scientists have increasingly attributed these out of body experiences to physiological processes and it is believed they are as a result of unusual brain activity caused by reduced blood flow to the brain.
