Vila Šeherezada je najneobičnija građevina u Dubrovniku. Nazivaju je još Taj Mahalom Mediterana, jer je to jedina zgrada koja je građena u istočnjačkom stilu.
Zgrada je dovršena 1929., po narudžbi bogatog ruskog Židova Vilima Zimdina koji je bio njen prvi vlasnik i stanovnik. Zimdin je u to vrijeme imao jednu tajnovitu ljubavnicu, Maurku crne puti, zvanu Šeherezada, kojoj je htio izgraditi posebnu palaču u raskošnom orijentalnom stilu po uzoru na dvorac iz zbirke priča 1001 noć. Zbog njenog nadimka, vila se tako i danas zove.
Bogataš je u Dubrovnik doveo bečkog arhitekta Alfreda Kellera, izdiktirao mu svoje megalomanske zamisli, ostavio mu brdo novca i dao rok od dvije godine. Kupaonica je brodom dovezena iz Amerike, a orgulje iz Petrograda.
Keller je uspio završiti zgradu s živopisnim terasama i elementima orijentalne arhitekture koje su u potpunosti iskakale od tradicionalne dubrovačke kamene gradnje. Zimdin, međutim, nije htio stati samo na dubrovačkom Taj Mahalu. Crkvu u svetom Jakovu htio je pretvoriti u kockarnicu, od stare gradske luke je pokušavao napraviti šetnicu uz more, a otok Lokrum mostom je htio povezati s kopnom na kojem bi se nalaziti razni komercijalni objekti...
Sreća po Dubrovnik da su ga gradske vlasti zaustavile u tim ludim naumima. Početkom Drugog svjetskog rata, dubrovački snovi ovog bogatog bankara su se raspršili, a komunistička vlast, vilu je nacionalizirala, nakon što su strijeljali generala Belajeva. Tom ruskom vojniku Zimdin je ostavio vilu na čuvanje, nakon što je sa ženom otišao u Ameriku (pričalo se da ga je tajnovita ljubavnica pratila). Zanimljvio da ni talijanski, ni njemački fašisti tijekom rata nikad nisu kročili u ovu vilu.
Stvaranjem Jugoslavije, komunisti je žele pretvoriti u Titovu palaču, ali njemu se nije sviđala, tako da nikad nije spavao tamo (svoju vilu je imao u Lapadu). Zimdini nasljednici pedesetih vilu traže natrag, ali komunističke vlasti upisuju je kao vlasništvo hotela Argentine, jer je državi bilo preskupo njeno održavanje.
Šezdesetih postaje striptiz mjesto, a početkom novog desetljeća opet mijenja ulogu, i postaje vila za bogataše. Tada u njoj dva mjeseca borave slavni holivudski glumci Elisabeth Taylor i Richard Burton koji su Zimdinovo ljubavno gnijezdo, pretvorili u svoje. U vrijeme njihova boravka u Šeherezadi, posjećivao ih je Tito.
Poslije se na toj lokaciji snimao film Okupacija u 26 slika, a glumci koji su tamo bili stacionirani, krali su vrijedni namještaj. Nakon toga, vila Šeherezada pada u zaborav, sve do tranzicije i privatizacije kada napokon postaje vlasništvo bogate čileanske obitelji Lukšić koja je hrvatskih korijena.
Danas je ona preuređena u elitnu rezidenciju u kojoj borave gosti za nekoliko tisuća eura po danu. Na raspolaganju imaju dizajnerski namještaj, jacuzzije u svim sobama, privatnu plažu, pogled na more iz svih kutova vile, batlera na raspolaganju i još mnogo luksuza.
Od poznatih gostiju koji su boravili u posljednje vrijeme ističe se ruski bogataš Viktor Vekselberg koji ju je 2007. godine unajmio preko cijelog ljeta i za to zadovoljstvo izdvojio 750 tisuća eura. U Šeherezadi je boravio i kazahstanski predsjednik Nursultan Nazarbajev s obitelji.
