The mezzo-soprano Elena Obraztsova, a leading opera singer of Moscow's Bolshoi Opera for more than two decades, died Monday in Germany. She was 75 years old. Obraztsova's cultural foundation said in a statement that she died of cardiac arrest at a clinic, but didn't provide further details.
Obraztsova's theatrical flair and vocal intensity made her a fixture at many prominent Russian and European opera houses, becoming one of the first Soviet-era singers to attain broad international recognition. She especially excelled in Russian repertoire but was also known for her dramatic roles by Verdi, Massenet, Donizetti and Mascagni.
Obraztsova appeared only sporadically in the United States, though she achieved a late-career renaissance stateside in the early 2000s, appearing in Metropolitan Opera premieres of Prokofiev's The Gambler in 2001 and War and Peace in 2002; and in The Queen of Spades at Los Angeles Opera (2001) and Washington Opera (2002).
Born in 1939 in Leningrad (St. Petersburg), Obraztsova graduated from that city's conservatory in 1964; the same year she became a soloist at the Bolshoi Theater. She went on to appear at La Scala and the Paris Opera in the 1960s, followed by her American debut at the San Francisco Opera in 1975.
The 1970s brought debuts at Vienna, Munich, Prague, Barcelona and London's Covent Garden, among other houses.
Following her Met debut in 1976 as Amneris in Verdi's Aida, she was tapped for productions of Carmen, Werther, Samson et Dalila and Norma, among others, though American dates became fewer in the 1980s and '90s. Nevertheless, her recordings and videos were eagerly devoured by opera fans, perhaps most notably a turn as Santuzza in Zeffirelli’s film version of Cavalleria Rusticana, from 1981.
Obraztsova also gave numerous recitals and master classes in Europe and Japan. In 1991, in the wake of the Three Tenors debut concert, she appeared in a fleeting spin-off called Three Sopranos, with Renata Scotto and Ileana Cotrubas. They appeared together for one performance at the Roman amphitheater in Syracuse, Italy (below).
Obraztsova is survived by her first husband, Vyacheslav Makarov, and her daughter from that marriage, Elena Makarova. The singer will be buried at Moscow's Novodevichy cemetery on Thursday.

Церемония прощания с Еленой Васильевной Образцовой пройдет 14 января с.г. в Большом театре с 11 до 15 часов.
Гражданская панихида начнется в 12 часов.
15 января в Храме Христа Спасителя (ул.Волхонка, 15) состоится литургия и отпевание (начало в 9.00, вход в храм будет открыт с 8 часов). По окончании службы тело певицы будет предано земле на Новодевичьем кладбище.
