The Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin (further on CNT)
operates in a city in which the theatre tradition is rich in it`s diversity. As
witnessed, the theatre life in Varaždin can be tracked down to 1637. Since then
and until 1771. performances were continuously performed within a framework of
Jesuit course on the Jesuit stage in the Gymnasium.Varaždin was given it`s
first theatre in 1788. In the 19th century performances were performed on
Croatian and German language. The German theatre dominated until the end of the
century and played a significant role in the expansion of the theatre culture
and the development of the Croatian theatre in general.
The current theatre building was built in 1873. according to
the blueprint of the famous Viennese architect Hermann Helmer (Hamburg, 13. Juli 1849.
– Vienna, 2.
April 1919). Helmer designed the theatre in Varaždin independently as his first
project in this proffesion. During the construction works Helmer met Filipina
Levanić, the daughter of the shoemaker Levanić from Dugi konac (today the place
is called Zagrebačka street)
whom he married several years later. Until the end of there lifes, they were
both frequent visitors of Varaždin. A photo of the theatre in Varaždin, his
architectonic firstling was always hanging above Helmer`s work desk. Herman and
Filipina had two sons and two daughters. Later on their daughters got married
to sons of the famous Austrian manufacturer Sacher. According to one testimony
they actually met in Varaždinske Toplice at the traditional Anna`s-dance, and
then got engaged in the house of Ivan Milčetić in Varaždin.
In 1873. Helmer formed a partnership with the architect
Ferdinand Fellner (Vienna,
19. April 1847. – Vienna,
22. March 1916.) and founded an architectonic bureau in Vienna,
Fellner & Helmer, specialized for constructing theatres and concert
halls throughout Europe. In their projects
they mostly applied Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo styles. They designed and
built over fifty European theatre buildings, as well as many castles, palaces
and other buildings, contributing in that way to the inestimable cultural,
artistic and social legacy of the European architecture and urban culture.
The first professional Croatian theatrical ensemble in
Varaždin was founded in 1898. Until 1915. the theatre was administrated by the
Croatian drama society, managed by the famous philologist and literature
historian Ivan Milčetić. It is known that in that period, round about 1907.,the
famous actress Žanka Stokić was also part of the ensemble. The famous
comediographer, editor and diplomat Branislav Nušić wrote a comedy play for
her, called „Gospodja ministarka“that was premiered in May of 1929.
Permanent city theatre was founded in 1915. in which the
three artistic ensembles worked simultaneously: drama, opera and operetta. This
tradition demonstrates the need to reconstitute this ensembles in the contemporary
life and developement of Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin. It is
crucial for the strategic developement of the theatre and it`s sucess in the
near future.
First seven seasons the manager of the CNT was Andro
Mitrović, (composer, conductor and the director), who was later also the
founder of the Maribor
opera. Permanent city theatre lastet until 1925. Until the second World War,
theatre seasons were hold by the theatre from Osijek which was always
considered Varaždin`s second centerline. The Society of the Croatian theatre
volunteers operated since 1942. In 1945. the theatre started to operate
continuously. During that time many great actors, singers and directors were a
part of the CNT theatrical life: this is where the famous Croatian actor
Zvonimir Rogoz started his career before he continued to work and perform in
Zagreb and in Ljubljana (since 1927. and until 1951. he was the leader of drama
at The National Theatre in Prague), one of the greatest Croatian comedians,
August Cilić, also started his career in Varaždin, same as mezzosoprano Ančica
Mitrović who was starting her opera carrer, Branko Tepavac, Milan Šepec, Viktor
Bek, Alfred Grunhut, Milan Orlović, Dejan Dubajić, Josip Martinčević, Đuro
Trbuhović, Vatroslav Hladić. After 1945. the most famous actors performing were
Franjo Majetić (movie and theatre comedian), Ivo Serdar, Sanda Langerholz,
Martin Sagner, Ivo Rogulja, Martin Bahmaz and many others.
Since then and until 1963. CNT has drama, operetta and a
permanent orchestra.
Directors that have set the deepest mark are Vladimir Gerić
and Petar Veček (he was also the manager of CNT from 1976. until 1983.), and
from the conductors it is important to mention Josip Vrhovski, Teodor Romanić
and Davorin Hauptfeld.
The Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin has all the
features of an contemporary national drama theatre, owing it to his various
repertoire and importance in Croatian theatre life. The repertoire includes
national drama production, particularly pieces of famous Croatian writers; Ivan
Bakmaz, Slobodan Šnajder, Ivan Supek, Miljenko Jergović, world classics such as
Sofoklo, Moliere, Shakespeare, Cervantes, F. Kafka, H. v. Hofmansthal, G.
Buchner, F. Molnar, M. Krleža, K. Schonherr…
The characteristic of the repertoire is also performance of
the world classics in the kajkavian dialect: „Mnogo vike ni za što“, Hamlet,
Jedermann…
CNT embraces and is oriented as well toward contemporary
works, experimental theatrical pieces, and exploring the varietyof stage
expression forms and performances. The diversity of the repertoire, genres and
estetic orientation is also the result of the fact that CNT has three stages:
the big stage, and two chamber stages. CNT periodically publishes his trade
journal „Kazalište“.
Moved by the broad understanding of great theatre
architects Helmer and Fellner, associated in one of the biggest and well known
architectonic bureau Fellner & Helmer, famous for constructing many
great theatres throughout Europe, Croatian National Theatre in Varaždin, as the
first architectonic and artistic creation of Herman Helmer would like to
initiate a program for a wide-ranging cooperation of all the theatrical
ensambles of the European centres of the theatrical arts that also operate
inside four walls of the magnificant creations of the authors Helmer and
Fellner.
If all the theatres that were designed, created and built by
two genius architect duo Helmer and Fellner unite in one constructive program
scheme of creative cooperation of all ensambles, therefor also exchange of artists;
soloists, directors, conductors, and guest performances of successfull artistic
masterpieces, that will then open the door to the arise of one big contemporary
European association of theatres that will exchange experience,
knowledge, skills and achievements and by that will improve and create a new
wave of creative ascending dynamic for all. Having all this in mind, the
administration of CNT in Varaždin, is preparing a meeting between managers of
all European theatres built by architects Helmer and Fellner, and in that
regard is also kindly anticipating support from the ministries of culture from
every country that is in this way associated with the theatre .

POVIJEST
KAZALIŠTA U VARAŽDINU
Hrvatsko
narodno kazalište u Varaždinu (dalje: HNK) djeluje u gradu u kojem je kazališna
tradicija vrlo bogata u raznovrsnosti.
Osvjedočeno, kazališni život u Varaždinu možemo pratiti od
1637.
širenju kazališne kulture i u kvalitetnom nastajanju hrvatskog kazališta.
1873.
Nad
Helmerovim pisaćim stolom uvijek je visjela fotografija varaždinskog kazališta,
njegova arhitektonskog prvijenca.
Herman
Hermann
Helmer (Hamburg,
13. srpnja 1849. – Wien, 2. travnja 1919.), austrijski arhitekt, zajedno s
arhitektom Ferdinandom Fellnerom ( Wien,19. travnja, 1847.- Wien, 22. ožujka,
1916.), osnovao je u Wien-u tvrtku - Fellner & Helmer, koja se
specijalizirala za gradnju kazališta i koncertnih dvorana, diljem Europe.
U
svojim projektima primjenjivali su građevne oblike renesanse, baroka i rokokoa.
Sagradili
su, odnosno projektirali pedesetak kazališnih zgrada, a uz to i brojne dvorce,
palače i druge građevine, pridonoseći neprocjenjivoj kulturno - umjetničkoj i
široj društvenoj baštini europske arhitekture, te urbane materijalne
kulture.
Značajnija
djela tvrtke Fellner & Helmer, zajedničkog autorstva velikih arhitekata,

Prvi
profesionalni hrvatski teatarski ansambl u Varaždinu, osnovan je 1898.
Od
1898. do 1915. kazalištem upravlja i organizira kazališni život Hrvatsko
poznati komediograf, publicist i diplomat Branislav Nušić, napisao komediju
“Gospodja ministarka”, praizvedenu svibnja,1929.
Stalno
opera, operetta, musical, u suvremenom životu i razvitku varaždinskoga HNK.
Obnova
glazbenih grana u HNK Varaždin, je značajna strateško - programska vrijednost
kazališta danas u ime novih stvaralačkih projekcija za uspjehe u neposrednoj
budućnosti.
Prvih
kasniji utemeljitelj Mariborske opere.
Stalno
kazalište održalo se do 1925. Potom, do Drugoga svjetskog rata, kazališne
sezone održava osječko kazalište, koje Varaždin drži svojom drugom
središnjicom. Od 1942. - 1945. djeluje Društvo hrvatskih kazališnih
dobrovoljaca, a od 1945. kontinuirano djeluje stalno kazalište.
Do
prvakom Drame Narodnoga divadla u Pragu.
Takodjer,
Veliku
opernu karijeru ovdje započinje mezzosopranistica Ančica Mitrović. Poznata su
imena hrvatskog glumišta Branko Tepavac, Milan Šepec, Viktor Bek, Alfred
Grunhut, Milan Orlović, Dejan Dubajić, Josip Martinčević, Đuro Trbuhović,
Vatroslav Hladić ……
Najpoznatiji
su glumci koji djeluju u Varaždinu poslije 1945. Franjo Majetić (veliki filmski
i kazališni komičar), Ivo Serdar, Sanda Langerholz, Martin Sagner, Ivo Rogulja,
Martin Bahmaz,,,,,,,,,,
Do
Josip Vrhovski, Teodor Romanić i Davorin Hauptfeld.
HNK
u Varaždinu, danas
Po
repertoaru i značenju u Hrvatskoj, HNK ima sva obilježja suvremenoga
nacionalnog dramskog kazališta.
U repertoarnom profilu preteže nacionalna dramska produkcija,
osobito praizvedbe hrvatskih pisaca – Ivan Bakmaz, Slobodan Šnajder, Ivan
Supek, Miljenko Jergović…... Stalno su na repertoaru klasici - Sofoklo,
Moliere, Shakespeare, Cervantes i srednjoeuropski dramatičari – F. Kafka, H. v.
Hofmansthal, G. Buchner, F. Molnar, M. Krleža, K. Schonherr……
Osobitost
Suvremenost
u orijentaciji Kazališta vidljiva je i u sklonosti istraživanju scenskoga
izraza i tzv. eksperimentalnim predstavama.
Raznovrsnosti
repertoara, žanrova i estetskih usmjerenja, pridonosi i činjenica da kazalište
ima tri scene - velika scena i dvije komorne.
Vrijednost
teatra predstavlja prije svega njegov ansambl s mnogo izvrsnih mladih glumaca,
ali i glumaca srednje i starije generacije.
U
Sunčana Zelenika, Marinko Prga, Robert Plemić, Zvonko Zečević i dr. Veliki oslonac ansamblu,
su već afirmirani glumci Tomislav
Lipljin, Ivica Plovanić i Jagoda Kralj-Novak.
Danas,
HNK
i glumci, dobitnici su, od 90-ih godina,
gotovo 50 državnih, nacionalnih i drugih nagrada i priznanja.
U
Varaždinu režiraju najugledniji hrvatski redatelji svih generacija - Georgij
Paro, Ivica Boban, Ivica Kunčević, Vladimir Gerić, Petar Veček, Želimir Mesarić, Borna Baletić, Ozren Prohić, Bobo Jelačić i
dr..
Kazalište
ima i posebnu granu - Dječju i lutkarsku scenu, koju uspješno vodi redatelj Dubravko Torjanac.
HNK
HNK povremeno izdaje
i stručno glasilo - Kazalište.
Potaknuti
širokom spoznajom o velikim kazališnim graditeljima, arhitektima Helmerom i
Fellnerom, udruženima u jednu od najpoznatijih specijaliziranih graditeljskih
tvrtki Helmer&Fellenr, autorima brojnih
kazališnih zgrada diljem Europe, HNK u Varaždinu, kao središte prvoga
umjetničkoga projekta Arh. Helmera,
zgrade Kazališta, inicira program suradnje svih kazališnih ansambala iz
europskih središta kazališne umjetnosti , koji djeluju u zdanjima nastalima
kreacijom tvrtke Helmer&Fellenr.
Helmer i Fellner, u konstruktivnu sustavnu programsku shemu kreativne suradnje
djelovanje, stvorili arhitekti –
europski kazališni velikani Hermann Helmer i Ferdinand Fellner.
Na
tragu ovoga projekta, priprema uprava HNK Varaždin, susret s ravnateljima svih
europskih kazališta koja djeluju u zgradama
specijalizirane kazališne
graditeljske tvrtke Helmer&Fellner.
U
tom smislu ćemo očekivati i potporu ministarstava kulture, svake od zemalja s
kojom smo povezani kreacijama velikih europskih kazališnih graditelja .
