Area artists join to contribute to tornado relief efforts

The Oklahoma City area arts communities are joining together to provide relief for the Moore tornado victims in the form of concerts, art and even comedy shows. The events already are underway and will continue indefinitely.

The Norman Arts Council has compiled a comprehensive list of the relief events and will continue to update this list as more events are planned.

Greg Johnson, owner of The Blue Door in Oklahoma City, said he and the artists who already had planned to play shows this weekend decided to donate the proceeds from their concert to storm victims through either The Red Cross or The United Way of Oklahoma.

“We just basically turned the weekend into a benefit for the tornado victims, since it was already scheduled,” Johnson said. “This is just a way for the people at The Blue Door to help out.”

Kevin Welch, Michael Fracasso and Miss Brown to You are scheduled to play at The Blue Door Friday at 8 p.m. Indoor tickets are sold out, but anyone wanting to listen and make a donation is welcome to hang out on the patio, Johnson said.

“People have been calling from all over the country who can’t make it to the show but want to make a donation,” Johnson said.

Norman Arts Council Communications Director Joshua Boydston said he was impressed by how quickly local artist responded to the need for relief funds.

“I was amazed, because it seemed like the second the tornado lifted off the ground, everyone was immediately thinking, ‘What can we do?’” Boydston said.

In addition to the relief events, area musicians and artists are stepping up and donating proceeds from album and art sales.

“I was kind of amazed to see all of the artists take what they hold near and dear to them and use it to help others,” Boydston said. “If there’s a silver lining to all this at all, it’s how much everyone is available to help their neighbors.”

Steven White, founder of Norman Music Festival, currently is booking a large show that has been confirmed for Wednesday, May 29, including JD McPherson and many other artists, Boydston said.

The Norman Arts Council compiled the following list of all events planned and the artists who are donating proceeds from their work. Check the Norman Arts Council website for updates.
