The thing about Prince Harry – or Hazza, as I rather embarrassingly called him during our interview – is that he’s so normal, so utterly unstuffy and devoid of airs and graces, that it took until about 9.30 yesterday morning for me to realise just how momentous his “coming out” of the mental health closet was.
I knew that his revelations about having counselling and coming close to a breakdown weren’t going to be buried at the back of the papers, but the reaction still astonished me.
Then again, the response to someone standing up and talking about the stuff in their heads never ceases to amaze me – from the genuine disbelief that someone might talk openly about a condition as stifling as depression, to the shock at recognising elements of your own private despair in someone else’s story.
