This Sporting Life is a 1963 British feature film based on a novel of the same name by David Storey which had won the 1960 Macmillan Fiction Award. It recounts the story of a rugby league footballer, Frank Machin, in Wakefield, a mining area of Yorkshire, whose romantic life is not as successful as his sporting life. Storey, a former professional rugby league footballer, also wrote the adapted screenplay.

Richard St John Harris (1 October 1930 – 25 October 2002) was an Irish actor, singer, theatrical producer, film director and writer. He appeared on stage and in many films, and is perhaps best known for his role as Frank Machin in This Sporting Life. He is also known for playing King Arthur in the 1967 film Camelot and the subsequent 1981 revival of the show. He played an aristocrat and prisoner in A Man Called Horse (1970), a gunfighter in Clint Eastwood's Western film Unforgiven (1992), Emperor Marcus Aurelius in Gladiator (2000), and Albus Dumbledore in both Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (2002). Harris had a top ten hit in the UK and the US with his 1968 recording of Jimmy Webb's song "MacArthur Park

Harris was schooled by the Jesuits at Crescent College. A talented rugby player, he was on several Munster Junior and Senior Cup teams for Crescent, and played for Garryowen. Harris' athletic career was cut short when he caught tuberculosis in his teens. He remained an ardent fan of the Munster Rugby and Young Munster teams then until his death, attending many of their matches, and there are numerous stories of japes at rugby matches with the actors and fellow rugby fans Peter O'Toole and Richard Burton.

In 1957, he married Elizabeth Rees-Williams, daughter of David Rees-Williams, 1st Baron Ogmore. Their three children are actor Jared Harris, who was once married to Emilia Fox, actor Jamie Harris and director Damian Harris, once married to Annabel Brooks and former partner of Peta Wilson. Harris and Rees-Williams divorced in 1969, after which Elizabeth married Rex Harrison. His maternal niece is actress Annabelle Wallis.

Harris's second marriage was to the American actress Ann Turkel. This marriage also ended in a divorce.

Harris was a member of the Roman Catholic Knights of Malta, and was also dubbed a knight by the Queen of Denmark in 1985.

At the height of his stardom in the 1960s and early 1970s Harris was almost as well known for his hellraiser lifestyle and heavy drinking as he was for his acting career. He was a longtime alcoholic until he became a teetotaler in 1981, although he did resume drinking Guinness a decade later. He gave up drugs after almost dying from a cocaine overdose in 1978.

Harris was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease in August 2002, reportedly after being hospitalised with pneumonia. He died at University College Hospital, London on 25 October 2002, aged 72, two and a half weeks before the American premiere of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. He had fallen into a coma in his final three days. Harris was a lifelong friend of actor Peter O'Toole, and his family reportedly hoped that O'Toole would replace Harris as Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. There were, however, worries of insuring O'Toole for the six remaining films in the series, and he was ultimately replaced as Dumbledore by the Irish-born actor Michael Gambon.

Harris's remains were cremated, and his ashes were scattered in the Bahamas, where he had owned a home

The Guy Quote – Richard Harris

His breakthrough performance was as the quintessential “angry young man” in the sensational drama This Sporting Life (1963), which scored him an Oscar nomination. He had a few ups and downs in his career. His last role was as Albus Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (2001) after his then 11-year-old granddaughter threatened never to speak to him again if he didn’t.

Richard Harris Film Festival 2014

http://www.ilovelimerick.ie/2014/richard-harris-film-festival/

The 2nd Richard Harris Film Festival will take place October 24-26 at the former Belltable space at 69 O’Connell Street and as promised it is bringing a little bit of Hollywood to Limerick City. Despite being a late withdrawal last year due to a clash of shooting schedules, film star and son of Richard, Jared Harris is to jet into Limerick with his wife Allegra, along with his brother Jamie.

Organisers confirmed that they had signed a three-year contract with the Harris estate to guarantee representation from the family at the October 24-26 festival, which this year boasts a hook up with a Los Angeles film festival. The winners of the short film competition will go forward for screening in Newport Beach. “We are delighted and the linkage with Newport Beach Film Festival is our major selling point,” explained commercial director of the festival, Rob Gill. “Because last year was our first year, the Harris family didn’t know what to expect. This year they bought into it a lot and they are really keen to progress it and to support it and make it successful. “Like ourselves, they want it to be a legacy event. We want it to be a living memorial to Richard Harris.”

Richard’s nephew Hayman Harris, who lives in Rhebogue, was at the launch and said the family were “delighted that the people involved are so enthusiastic and want to carry on his memory, which is great. “The whole idea is to carry on his memory and give inspiration to young people who want to get into the business, that Limerick is not far removed from Hollywood or wherever, that it is still possible. He has proved that and other people are proving it as well,” he said. Included among the three-day festival will be screenings of The Field, What Richard Did, Starred Up and a short film competition. The theme of the festival is the Irish Diaspora abroad, fitting given that Rob Gill, Zeb Moore and Eleanor McSherry dreamt up the idea for it at a meeting for The Gathering.

The short film programme, which includes the Short Film Competition shortlisted 10 films, which is in conjunction with Newport Beach Film Festival, one of the biggest industry festivals in California (they are the only film festival in Ireland that offers this).
