Njemačka demokršćanka Ursula von der Leyen, koju je Europsko vijeće u utorak predložilo za funkciju predsjednice Europske komisije, političarka je s bogatim iskustvom na čelu nekoliko njemačkih ministarstava, a rođena je i u političkoj obitelji: njezin otac je bio poznati političar Ernst Albrecht.

Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen se dolaskom na čelo Europske komisije zapravo vraća u središte Europske unije. Naime, njemačka političarka je rođena 1958. upravo u Bruxellesu, gdje je njezin otac, kasniji premijer savezne pokrajine Donja Saska Ernst Albrecht, obnašao visoke funkcije u Europskoj ekonomskoj zajednici i Europskoj zajednici, pretečama Europske unije. Von der Leyen je u Bruxellesu provela prvih 13 godina svog života

Strah od RAF-a

Od 1977. do 1980. studirala je ekonomiju na uglednoj London School of Economics. U Londonu je, zbog straha od terorista Frakcije Crvene Armije (RAF), koji su u to vrijeme prijetili njemačkim političarima i članovima obitelji, studirala pod lažnim imenom Rose Ladson.

Nakon povratka u Njemačku, buduća ministrica studirala je medicinu nakon čega je doktorirala i specijalizirala ginekologiju. 2015. su se pojavile optužbe da je von der Leyen prepisala veći dio svog doktorata. Nakon istrage Sveučilišta u Hannoveru, zaključeno je da doktorat 'sadrži greške', ali je odlučeno da Von der Leyen smije zadržati doktorsku titulu.

1986. Ursula Albrecht se udaje za liječnika i potomka poznate obitelji tekstilnih industrijalaca, Heika von der Leyena, s kojim ima sedmero djece.

Kasni ulazak u politiku

Politici se posvetila relativno kasno: članicom Kršćansko-demokratske zajednice (CDU) postala je tek 1990., a u pokrajinsku politiku je ušla krajem devedesetih.

Na saveznu političku scenu je došla 2005. kada ju je novopečena kancelarka Angela Merkel dovela na mjestu ministrice obitelji. U drugom kabinetu Merkel, Von der Leyen je obnašala mjesto ministrice rada, a 2013. je preuzela ministarstvo obrane.

Ursula Gertrud von der Leyen (About this soundlisten (help·info); née Albrecht, 8 October 1958) is a German politician serving as Minister of Defence since 2013. A member of the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU), she is the first woman in German history to hold the office.

She was born and raised in Brussels, where her father Ernst Albrecht was one of the first European civil servants from 1958, and is a native French and German speaker. She moved to Hanover in 1971, where her father later became Prime Minister of the state of Lower Saxony, and graduated as a physician in 1987. She became involved in politics in 2001 and served as a cabinet minister in the state government of Lower Saxony from 2003 to 2005. In 2005 she joined the federal cabinet, first as Minister of Family Affairs and Youth from 2005 to 2009, then as Minister of Labour and Social Affairs from 2009 to 2013, before becoming Minister of Defence in 2013. She is the only minister to have served continuously in Angela Merkel's cabinet since she took office. von der Leyen has previously been regarded as a main contender to succeed Merkel as Chancellor and a favourite to become President of Germany and Secretary-General of NATO.

On 2 July 2019, von der Leyen was nominated by the European Council to the position of President of the European Commission. If confirmed by the European Parliament, she will be the first woman and the first German since Walter Hallstein to hold the office.

The Albrecht family was among the patrician (hübsche) families of the Electorate and Kingdom of Hanover and many of her ancestors were civil servants who served the Hanoverian electors who were also Kings of the United Kingdom. Ursula von der Leyen is also a descendant of Baron Ludwig Knoop, a cotton merchant from Bremen and one of the most successful entrepreneurs of the 19th century Russian Empire.

She is the niece of the conductor George Alexander Albrecht and a first cousin of the conductor Marc Albrecht.

She is married to Heiko von der Leyen, a professor of medicine, the CEO of a medical engineering company and a member of the von der Leyen family, an aristocratic family noted as silk merchants and industrialists. She met him at a university choir in Göttingen. They have seven children, born between 1987 and 1999. The von der Leyen family are Lutheran members of the Evangelical Church of Germany.

Christine Madeleine Odette Lagarde (French: [kʁistin madlɛn ɔdɛt laɡaʁd]; née Lallouette, IPA: [laluɛt]; born 1 January 1956) is a French lawyer and politician serving as Managing Director (MD) and Chairwoman of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) since 2011.

She previously held various senior ministerial posts in the Government of France: she was Minister of the Economy, Finance and Industry (2007–2011), Minister of Agriculture and Fishing (2007) and Minister of Commerce (2005–2007). Lagarde was the first woman to become Finance Minister of a G8 economy and is the first woman to head the IMF. A noted anti-trust and labour lawyer, Lagarde was the first female chairman of the major international law firm Baker & McKenzie, between 1999 and 2004. On 16 November 2009, the Financial Times ranked her the best Finance Minister in the Eurozone.

On 28 June 2011, she was named as the next Managing Director of the IMF for a five-year term, starting on 5 July 2011, replacing Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Her appointment is the 11th consecutive appointment of a European to head the IMF. In 2014, Lagarde was ranked the 5th most powerful woman in the world by Forbes magazine. She was reelected by consensus for a second five-year term, starting 5 July 2016, being the only candidate nominated for the post of Managing Director. In December 2016, a French court found her guilty of negligence for her role in the Bernard Tapie arbitration, but did not impose a penalty. In 2018, Forbes ranked her number three on its World's 100 Most Powerful Women list.

Lagarde was born in Paris, France, into a family of academics. Her father, Robert Lallouette, was a Professor of English; her mother, Nicole (Carré), was a Latin, Greek and French literature teacher. Lagarde and her three brothers, all younger, spent their childhood in Le Havre where she attended the Lycée François 1er and Lycée Claude Monet. As a teenager, Lagarde was a member of the French national synchronised swimming team. After her baccalauréat in 1973, she went on an American Field Service scholarship to the Holton-Arms School in Bethesda, Maryland. During her year in the United States, Lagarde worked as an intern at the U.S. Capitol as Representative William Cohen's congressional assistant, helping him correspond with French-speaking constituents during the Watergate hearings. She graduated from Paris West University Nanterre La Défense, where she obtained master's degrees in English, labor law, and social law.She also holds a master's degree from the Institut d'études politiques in Aix-en-Provence. Since 2010, she has presided over the Aix school's board of directors. She also prepared for the École nationale d'administration's entrance exam but ultimately failed to gain admission to the elite school.

Lagarde is divorced and has two sons, Pierre-Henri Lagarde (born 1986) and Thomas Lagarde (born 1988).Since 2006, her partner has been the entrepreneur Xavier Giocanti from Marseille.

A health-conscious vegetarian who rarely drinks alcohol, Lagarde's hobbies include regular trips to the gym, cycling, and swimming.

On 2 July 2019, she was nominated by the European Council to succeed Mario Draghi as President of the European Central Bank on 1 November 2019.
