Eminent Russian piano teacher has died

Vera Gornostaeva, professor at the Moscow Conservatoire and teacher of more than 50 international competition winners, has died aged 85. (Russian TV report here).

A student of the formidable Heinrich Neuhaus, Gorostaeva taught Emil Gilels’s daughter Elena and went on to train three or four generations of musician families. Ivo Pogorelich and Sergey Babayan were among her star pupils.

She recorded for Philips, Yamaha and other labels.

Vera Gornostaeva (b. October 1, 1929) is a Russian pianist and pedagogue.

Emeritus Artist of the Russian Federation, Gornostaeva is a graduate of the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, where her teacher was the legendary Heinrich Neuhaus.

In addition to her extensive performing career, Gornostaeva is a prominent professor at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory; holds masterclasses in Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland, England, and the USA. She has presented masterclasses in Japan since 1990 under the auspices of the Yamaha Musical Fund that are broadcast by NHK-TV. Her book, "Two Hours After the Concert" was translated and published there.

Other educational activities include leading annual seminars for Russian music teachers; giving lectures on radio and TV on classical music and the performing arts; and publishing articles and books. She is a jury member and often chairman of the jury at many prestigious international music competitions, and is also the President of the Moscow Association of Musicians.

Professor Gornostaeva is renowned for having trained about 50 prize winners of international piano competitions, including Alexander Slobodyanik, Semion Kruchin, Valery Sigalevitch, Petras Geniušas, Dina Joffe, Yuri Lisichenko, Pavel Egorov, Alexander Paley, Eteri Andjaparidze, Ivo Pogorelich, Aleksandra Romanić, Sergei Babayan, Marian Pivka, Maxim Philippov, Ayako Uehara, Yurie Miura, Lukas Geniušas, Vadym Kholodenko, Andrey Gugnin and others.

She has made numerous recordings for Philips, Phoenix, Yamaha, and other labels of piano works by Brahms, Chopin, Debussy, Liszt, Schumann, Schubert, Scriabin, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, and Shostakovich.
