Plan a truly unforgettable
New Year’s Eve for 2013 now! After more than 40 years at the Hofburg Vienna
it’s finally time to say goodbye to the Kaiserball. On 31 December 2013 the
inaugural LE GRAND BAL will open a new chapter in Viennese ball history with a
night to remember and culinary delights to die for.
Welcome to LE GRAND BAL
/former Kaiserball) at the Vienna Hofburg on 31.12.2013:
Vienna´s New Year´s Eve 2013
highlight and the starter of the
upcoming ball season in 2013/2014.
Welcome to LE GRAND BAL at
the imperial Hofburg Vienna: the Austrian capital’s premier New Year’s Eve
event and the prelude to the ball season.
At 7.30pm stunning lighting
and a red carpet reception will mark the official start of the event for diners
and VIPs. Cocktails will be served in the Hofburg Foyer and walking acts will
get everyone in the mood for a New Year’s party to remember. Extras in fancy
dress will open the grand staircase and accompany the visitors into the
staterooms beyond. At 10pm the event will open to all the other guests who will
be welcomed with a glass of sparkling white wine and entertainment from the
walking acts.
The ball opens at 10.30 pm.
The debutants’ committee, followed by members of the executive committee and
the honorary committee enter the Festsaal in a formal procession. Choreographed
by the Elmayer dance school, the debutants will dance the traditional
polonaise. The Vienna State Ballet, accompanied by the Vienna Opera Ball
Orchestra, will give a stunning New Year’s performance. Afterwards, the floor
opens to all comers once the words “Alles Walzer” ring out.
Kaiserball Opens Vienna's Grand Ball
Season
Vienna welcomes the New Year with true elegance and style.
As New Year’s eve approaches, many people from Austria and even other countries
who love to waltz prepare themselves for the start of the Vienna Balls.
The Kaiserball is the
traditional opener of the grand ball season and this takes place every December
31st at the Hofburg palace. This event opens with the changing of guard as
performed by the Imperial Guard situated at the entrance hall of the palace.
Guests are then invited by the orchestras to dance in the state chambers
decorated with thousands of lovely and colorful flowers.
As guests enter the palace,
they are greeted by the royal family led by Empress Sisi and Emperor Franz
Josef. Cocktails including red and white wine or champagne are served to them
as the Hoffball Orchestra led by Johann Straub play classical music. The ladies
also receive a small gift from the so-called footmen.
Dancing the waltz is a major
part of the Kaiserball. This takes place through the Hofburg Palace
staterooms with men dressed in their livery and women dressed in their
beautiful gowns. But that’s not where the event ends.
At the stroke of midnight,
the Pummerin or the bell from St. Stephan’s Cathedral is rung. This is a signal
for the Imperial Couple to greet the guests with a Happy new year.
From there, the Viennese
Operatta Gala follows after midnight at the Grand Festival Hall. Guests can
watch a lively performance featuring the Vienna State Opera and Volksopera’s
singers and dancers.
Kaiserball guests can choose
to take part in the four-course pre-ball dinner or in the buffet served
throughout the evening. The pre-ball dinner is served in various halls of the
palace with waiters in silk livery serving the food.

THE VIENNA
OPERA BALL
These are images which are
broadcast around the world every year. The opening is a dazzling festival, with
artists from all over the world taking part; the legendary entrance of the
young ladies‘ and gentlemen’s committee; the elegantly appointed ballroom; the
exquisitely decorated House on the Ring, international guests from the world of
culture, business, politics, sports and science.
On the one hand, the Vienna
Opera Ball combines the Viennese lifestyle with international allure, and on
the other the modern stage management of a traditional event. This is in equal
measure a high-spirited ball in a unique atmosphere and the fashionable
highlight of the ball season. Over the last two years, it has once again increasingly
become an artists’ ball: the Vienna State Opera Orchestra performs under the
baton of distinguished conductors for the opening, as do the Wiener
Staatsballett and international stars. Besides, the Opera Ball has once more
become an extremely popular event where cultural icons from all over the world
come together to celebrate.

History of the Vienna Opera Ball
The first ball festivities
may not have been at the Royal and Imperial Court Opera Theater next to the
Kärntner gate. Legend has it that the artists that worked on this stage
organized a celebration in honor of the Vienna Congress (1814 – 1815).
Various balls, in both small
and large establishments, were held in the Imperial
City on the Danube
in the 1820’s and 1830’s. The artists, however, wanted a more intimate context
for their celebrations. They found the ideal solution in the “Redoutensäle”,
the refined yet cozy ballrooms of the Hofburg Imperial
Palace.
There was a time in Vienna when the Viennese
people were not in the mood for dancing: after the bloody and inglorious exit
of the 1848 revolution. It was a number of years before the joy of life again
reached its previous intensity, and the balls and celebrations in the
"Viennese style" were again made possible.
In the year 1862, the famous
“Theater an der Wien” was again given the highest honor – to be allowed to
organize the Ball festivities. At that time it naturally modeled its
spectacular events after the extravagant Paris Opera Ball.
When, in the year 1869, the
staff of the Royal and Imperial Court Opera could finally move into their
magnificent new home on the ring, Emperor Franz Joseph I refused permission to
hold dance celebrations in his theater. Therefore, the first ball was called
the “Ball in the Hofoper” and was not held in the opera house on the ring, but
instead in the equally new and impressive building of the “Gesellschaft der
Musikfreunde in Wien”.
In 1877, the Emperor finally
gave his consent to a "soiree" in his opera house. However, dancing
was not officially allowed at this celebration on the night of the 11th to 12th
of December. However, the “Vienna Tourist Journal” stated the following day:
“…it was initially quite difficult, but Viennese blood and Viennese courage
withstood... after midnight there was the first proper dance in the ballroom of
our opera house."
After the fall of the Empire
in 1918, it took a surprisingly short time for the young republic to remember
the imperial celebrations in the opera house. On January 21, 1921, the Republic of Austria held the first “Opernredoute”,
the predecessor to the official Ball. In January 1935, the event was designated
for the first time, the “Vienna Opera Ball” - a magical name, whose effect did
not fail in the pale light of the thirties.
In 1939, on the eve of the
Second World War, by order of the “Reichsregierung” of German occupied Austria, last
Opera Ball was held. After the reestablishment of the Republic
of Austria in 1945, and after
overcoming of the first years of adversity in a war-torn Vienna, the grand reopening of the Opera
House was celebrated in November 1955.
On February 9, 1956, for the
first time in the second republic, the beautiful opera house was transformed
into the brilliant opera ballroom.
