Born on 29 September 1995, in Cracow, he began learning piano at the age of five. He attended music school in Cracow and is currently studying with Stefan Wojtas at Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz. He has won numerous prizes and distinctions, including in the International Chopin Competition for Children in Jelenia Góra (2008, Second Prize), ‘Chopin +’ in Budapest (2010, First Prize), ‘A Step to Mastery’ in St Petersburg (2011, Third Prize), the Chopin Competition in Narva (2012, First Prize and the EMCY prize) and Żychlin Festival (2013, Second Prize). In 2014, he won First Prize in the ‘Arthur Rubinstein in memoriam’ Competition in Bydgoszcz, Second Prize in the ‘Premio Academia’ in Rome, and First Prize and a distinction for the best performance of a Chopin nocturne in the ‘Halina Czerny Stefańska in memoriam’ Competition in Poznań. He has performed as a soloist with symphony orchestras in Jelenia Góra and Tallinn, and also with the Warmia-Masuria and Jelenia Góra philharmonic orchestras (in Chopin’s Concerto in E minor). He is a recipient of grants and scholarships from the National Children’s Fund, the ‘Sapere Auso’ Małopolska Scholarship Foundation, the ‘Pro Musica Bona’ Foundation and the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

1st prize (30 000 €) and gold medal - Seong-Jin Cho

Born on 28 May 1994, in Seoul, he is a student of Michel Beroff at the Paris Conservatoire. He has won the International Fryderyk Chopin Competition for Young Pianists (2008) and a piano competition in Hamamatsu, Japan (2009), as well as Third Prize in the Pyotr Tchaikovsky Competition in Russia (2011) and the Arthur Rubinstein in Tel Aviv (2014). He has performed in concert with the Mariinsky Theatre Symphony Orchestra (cond. Valery Gergiev), the French Radio, Czech, Seoul (all with Myung-Whun Chung), Munich (cond. Lorin Maazel) and Ural (cond. Dmitry Liss) philharmonic orchestras, Berlin Radio Orchestra (cond. Marek Janowski), Russian National Orchestra (cond. Mikhail Pletnev) and Basel Symphony Orchestra (cond. Pletnev). He has toured Japan, Germany, France, Russia, Poland, Israel, China and the US. He has appeared at the Tokyo Opera, in Osaka, at the Moscow Conservatory and at the Mariinsky Theatre in St Petersburg, including with recitals. He has participated in numerous European festivals, including in St Petersburg, Moscow, Duszniki-Zdrój and Cracow, as well as festivals in New York and Castleton. As a chamber musician, he has been invited to work with the outstanding violinist Kyung Wha Chung.

Fryderyk Chopin Society Prize for best performance of a polonaise (3 000 €)


2nd prize (25 000 €) and silver medal - Charles Richard-Hamelin

Born on 17 July 1989, in Lanaudière, he studied with Paul Surdulescu, Sara Laimon, Boris Berman and André Laplante. He gained his bachelor’s degree at McGill University in 2011 and his master’s at Yale School of Music in 2013, receiving full scholarships at both institutions. He has won Second Prize in the Montreal International Musical Competition and Third Prize and a special award for the best performance of a Beethoven sonata in the Seoul International Music Competition. In April 2015, he won the prestigious Career Development Award offered by the Women’s Musical Club of Toronto. As a soloist, he has performed with the Montreal, Toronto and Korean symphony orchestras, the Orchestre Métropolitain and I Musici de Montréal. Since 2014, he has been a member of the celebrated Trio Hochelaga. He has performed in many major festivals in Canada (Lanaudière, Orford, Ottawa Chamberfest, Montreal Chamber Music Festival and Domaine Forget). His debut solo CD featuring late works by Chopin was released in 2015 on the Analekta label.

Krystian Zimerman Prize for best performance of a sonata (10 000 €)


3rd prize (20 000 €) and bronze medal - Kate Liu

Born on 23 May 1994, in Singapore, she studied with Alan Chow, Micah Yui and Emilia del Rosario at the Chicago Institute of Music. She is currently preparing her bachelor’s degree at the Curtis Institute of Music, under the guidance of Robert McDonald. She has won prizes in the 3rd Asia-Pacific International Chopin Piano Competition, competitions in Montreal, at the Eastman School of Music, at Hilton Head, the Thomas and Evon Cooper in Oberlin, in New York, the International Piano Teachers Association Competition and the Louisiana International Competition. Twice a recipient of a grant from the American Chopin Foundation (2011 and 2012), she has given recitals in New York (incl. Carnegie Hall, Subculture Arts Underground, Salmagundi Club, Temple Emanu-El) and Washington (Kennedy Center, Phillip’s Collection), on television (WTTW Chicago) and radio (‘From the Top’ programme on American public radio and a programme broadcast by WFMT radio of Chicago). At the Chicago Symphony Center, she performed Schubert’s Fantasy in F minor four-handed with Lang Lang. She has performed with the Daegu (South Korea), Montreal, Cleveland, Hilton Head, Evanston, Skokie Valley and Rochester orchestras.

Polish Radio Prize for best performance of mazurkas (5 000 €)


4th prize (15 000 €) - Eric Lu

Born on 15 December 1997. Regarded as one of the finest pianists of the younger generation. He began learning piano at the age of six with Dorothy Shi, before training at the New England Conservatory Preparatory School with Alexander Korsantia and A. Ramon Rivera. Since 2013, he has been a student of Jonathan Biss and Robert McDonald at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He is also a student of Dang Thai Son. He has won prizes in international piano competitions, such as the National Chopin Piano Competition of the US in Miami (2015, First Prize), Moscow International Chopin Competition for Young Pianists (2014, First Prize), the Minnesota International e-Piano Junior Competition (2013, First Prize and the special Schubert prize) and the Ettlingen International Competition (2010, First Prize). He has performed in the US, Germany, Italy and China. He has worked with the Minnesota Orchestra, State Youth Orchestra of Armenia, Wellesley Symphony, Longwood Symphony and Boston Civic Symphony. He is a great admirer of the playing of Grigory Sokolov, whom he considers to be one of the greatest pianists of all time.

He qualified for the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition on the basis of § III/2 of the Competition Rules as winner of the US Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Miami (2015).


5th prize (10 000 €) - Yike (Tony) Yang

Born on 7 December 1998, he is a student of Julian Martin at the Juilliard School of Music and also a pupil of Dang Thai Son. He is a prize-winner of eight international competitions. His recent successes include winning the Thomas and Evon Cooper International Piano Competition in Oberlin and finishing second in the Canadian Chopin Competition. He has also won prizes in the Bösendorfer and Yamaha Competition at Arizona State University, the Hilton Head International Piano Competition for Young Artists and the Gina Bachauer Competition in Salt Lake City. He has performed with the Cleveland and Hilton Head orchestras, the Toronto Sinfonietta and the orchestra of the Royal Academy of Music. He has participated in many festivals and also had the opportunity to perform in front of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall. He has taken part in numerous radio and television programmes (incl. the ‘Inspiration Generation’ series on Global TV).


6th prize (7 000 €) - Dmitry Shishkin

Born on 12 February 1992, in Chelyabinsk, he was first taught piano by his mother, a teacher and pianist. By the age of two, he could already play short works, he gave his first concert aged three and performed with orchestra three years later. From the age of four, he attended the Pyotr Tchaikovsky School in his home city. After five years, he entered the Gnessin School in Moscow and began learning with Mikhail Khokhlov. Since 2010, he has studied at the Moscow Conservatory with Eliso Virsaladze. In that same year, he played Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in front of the public and the state authorities on Red Square, with the ‘Virtuosos of Gnessin’ Orchestra conducted by Mikhail Khokhlov. He has won many prizes, including in the 59th Ferruccio Busoni Competition (2013, Third Prize) and in competitions in Russia, China, Germany, Bulgaria and Poland. He has performed with orchestras across Russia, including the Moscow State Symphony and Moscow Philharmonic. He has performed in Bulgaria, Germany, the former Yugoslavia, Italy, Spain, France, the UK, Japan, Austria, China and Poland. Besides piano, he also composes.

ALJOŠA JURINIĆ

Born on 2 June 1989, in Zagreb, he studied with Eliso Virsaladze at the Scuolo di Musica in Fiesola (2011–2014) and is now preparing his concert diploma under the guidance of Grigory Gruzman at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt in Weimar. He has won the 16th Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau (2012) and competitions organised in Italy: the Spazio Teatro 89 − Encore! Shura Cherkassky Competition in Milan, the Luciano Luciani Competition in Cosenza and a competition in Massarosa. Thus he won the Grand Prix in all four competitions affiliated to the Alink-Argerich Foundation which he entered. He has also received the Best Young Musician award from the Zagreb Philharmonic. Since his debut in London (2007), he has performed in recitals and concerts in many countries, including in the festivals ‘Piano Fortissimo’ (Zagreb) and ‘Split Summer’ in Croatia, the ‘Summer Music Evenings’ in Kiev, ‘From Easter to Ascension’ in Tbilisi, the Chopin Festival in Nohant, ‘Serate Musicali’ in Milan and ‘Festival Puccini’ in Torre del Lago. In February this year, he debuted with a recital at Carnegie Hall.


AIMI KOBAYASHI

Born on 23 September 1995, in Ube. From the age of seven, she was a pupil of Yuko Ninomiya, and she is currently a student of the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. She made her debut with orchestra in Japan at the age of seven and gave her first recital abroad aged nine. A few years later, she recorded a disc of that recital for EMI and became the youngest artist ever to perform at the Suntory Hall. She has performed in concert with the Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century under Frans Brüggen and the Moscow Virtuosi with Vladimir Spivakov. Since an early age, she has been winning prizes in piano competitions. She is a three-time finalist of the Japanese National Piano Teachers Association’s competition. Her recent successes include a prize in the Gina Bachauer Competition for Young Pianists in Salt Lake City. She has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Salle Cortot in Paris, Opera City in Tokyo and Cracow Philharmonic, and her concerts have been broadcast by television stations in Japan and around the world. She has also performed live on the NHK in Japan. Her discography includes recordings of music by Chopin, Bach, Beethoven and Schumann.

GEORGIJS OSOKINS

Born on 25 April 1995, in Riga. He began learning piano at the age of five and made his concert debut as a ten-year-old in Mozart’s Concerto in D minor, K466 with the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra. He is a student of Sergejs Osokins and since 2009 has also taken lessons from Mikhail Voskresensky. Since September 2015, he has been continuing his studies at the Juilliard School of Music. He has won the 9th International Chopin Competition for Young Pianists in Moscow (2014), the Scriabin Competition in Paris (2009) and the Jurmale International Piano Competition in Latvia (2010). He has also won the special prize for the best performance of a work by Chopin in the ‘Rina Sala Gallo’ International Piano Competition in Monza, Italy. He has performed in concert with the Lviv Symphony Orchestra, the Amber Orchestra of Liepāja, the Armenian National Orchestra and the Wratislavia Chamber Orchestra, among others. He has won a reputation for his prizes and appearances in international festivals and has also been distinguished by an award from the Latvian Minister of Culture. He has attended masterclasses given by Dmitry Bashkirov, Sergei Babayan, Bernd Goetzke, Georg Friedrich Schenck and Einar Steen-Nøkleberg.

The auditions for the 17th International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition began on 3 October; 78 pianists from 20 countries took part in them.

Appearing in the finals were 10 pianists from 8 countries, who performed one of Fryderyk Chopin’s piano concerti with the Warsaw Philharmonic under the direction of Jacek Kaspszyk. Nine of the participants selected the Concerto in E minor op. 11; and only one, Charles Richard-Hamelin, the Concerto in F minor op. 21.


According to the rules and regulations, pianists from all over the world born from 1985 to 1999 were permitted to apply for the Competition. In order to take part in the rivalry, they were required to send in their applications, together with a video recording containing the program from the first round, by 1 December 2014. After announcing that applications were being accepted, The Fryderyk Chopin Institute received the record number of over 450 applications from all over the world. Based on analysis of the recordings and applications sent in, the Admission Committee selected 160 pianists, who took part in public Preliminary Round in April of this year in Warsaw. From this group, the jury admitted 77 pianists to the main competition. Seven pianists – winners of the international competitions mentioned in the Rules and Regulations, as well as the prizewinners at the Polish Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition 2015 – ensured themselves participation in the October competition, bypassing the Preliminary Round. Among those taking part, the most numerous groups were from Poland (14 people) and China (13 people); beyond this, 12 pianists from Japan; 8 from South Korea; 6 from Russia; 4 from the United States; 3 each from Italy, Canada and Great Britain; 2 from the Czech Republic; and 1 representative each from Belarus, Croatia, France, Greece, Hungary, Indonesia, Latvia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.


The organizer of the Competition is the Fryderyk Chopin Institute. The project is included in the Accessible Culture Program of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage. The Competition Patron is Bank Zachodni WBK Santander Group.


The Principal Partner is Totalizator Sportowy. The Competition Co-organizer is Channel 2 of Polish Radio.
