Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has been on the throne since succeeding her father King Frederick IX in 1972. The head of the Danish Royal Family will be turning 80 in April and speculation has been rife at the prospect Her Majesty may quit her role on her birthday to pass on the crown to her heir Crown Prince Frederik and his wife Princess Mary. The Queen of Denmark became the first female monarch of the country to rule in her own right since Margrethe I ruled the Scandinavian kingdoms between 1375 and 1412. Margrethe II succeeded her father after his death in 1972 and her eldest son to husband Prince Henrik, Prince Frederik, became the heir apparent and gained the title of Crown Prince. The couple have four children, Prince Christian, 14, Princess Isabella, 12, and twins Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent, 9. Prince Christian is the heir presumptive to his father Prince Frederik and is currently second in line to the throne of Denmark.
